CHAPTER EIGHT: The Hidden

"Care to share, Lord Aldrin?" The headmaster walked inside the room, his wrinkled eyes only had space for Aldrin. "What did you bring to the Academy?" "My eagerness to learn, Sir, and to be enlightened." Aldrin replied with a respectful bow of his head, implying submission. And for the headmaster San Bowman, it was a gift from the heavens. Watching his best student and the highest of the highborns grovel before him was pure bliss. But his face remained unmoving, "Go to your seats." The three lords walked quietly while still facing him, slowly pacing towards their designated seats at the top of the room. "Walk faster." The headmaster called out as eyes began to fall on them. And they did albeit the act being a challenge for them. When they reached the top, Aldrin ushered Kana to sit first before him. The desk covered her small frame and the distance between them and the other students below their desk helped in hiding her. They kicked off their lecture. Kana had her ears perked up for any valuable information she could detect. But it was useless. The lecture was about engineering. Maybe it was a guide on how to make structures or on how to inventory them, but Kana's head hurts just by listening. She wanted to slip out and explore. However, it seemed impossible as the entrance was at the bottom floor. She risked a glance at the place and saw only men attending. There were about fifteen of them. And all of them had dog ears sticking out at the top of their heads. Aldrin secretly handed her a book when the headmaster had his back turned. Kana examined it and found it to be a children's book riddled with stories made for sleeping, stinging her pride. Ayen smiled at her and patted her back. Since she had nothing to do, she started flipping the pages. Cinderella. Snow White. Beauty and the Beast. They were common stories from her past life. It's just that their versions in the book involved dog ears and tails. 'What the hell,' she thought. If Aldrin had to give her a book, then why could it not be a useful one? Something about her predicament. The lecture seemed to take up hours. At one point, she even dozed off on Aldrin's lap. But when she thought it was never going to end, she heard students rousing from their seats. 'Is it time for a break?' She asked internally. Unfortunately, it isn't. It's merely time for their practicum on Defense Arts that is going to take place in another hall. "You're not bringing her there, are you? The headmaster almost caught you." Mikael queried. "No, I plan to go first and finish early in our practicum. After that, I'll excuse myself and come back for her. She's safer here." "Well, I guess that's better than risking it. Say, Aldrin, I was wondering. Why doesn't she have any scent to her? Has she morphed yet?" Ayen asked after caressing Kana's flamed hair. Aldrin hesitated for a while, then shook his head. "How curious." Ayen and Mikael remarked, "We'll be going ahead then." With that, they stood up and walked away Aldrin held Kana's shoulders, his ocean eyes serious, "Listen carefully, Amara. You have to stay here and wait until I come back. I can't take you with me to the other hall because there's a greater chance people will see you there. Stay here and don't go anywhere, all right? I'll be back in a while. I won't be long." Kana nodded. He pulled her again and took her for an embrace. How many times does this make it? She noticed how her brothers seemed to hug her a lot. Not that that's a bad thing. "Thank you for being such a good girl, Ara. Please, stay here." Aldrin said with quivering irises. He hugged her again, but this time it was apparent that he was unwilling to let go. Kana patted his back a few times, pulling him back to reality. He slowly went away after some time. Kana released a heavy sigh as her chest seemed to be lighter now. She stretched her legs and arms before thinking where to go. Sure, Aldrin instructed her to stay put but this school was practically a castle. She can't afford not to roam around. She'll just have to be careful. But a part of her felt guilty for rebelling against her older brother. She stands and trails the desks with her finger. She looks down as her feet take her to the bottom of the room. There isn't really much to see in the place without the students filling it. She ponders on going outside and was about to when her eyes caught something on the stone wall. In period movies, there usually was a hidden passage behind walls. Something seemed to be calling behind that wall. She stepped closer to it and thought for a while. Then, her hands started feeling it, pushing the stones, and hoping for a sound to come or something to happen. She pushed, and pushed the stones that made up the wall but fell in vain. Her small hand had gotten tired of her attempt. Curse her feeble young body. But then, she notices a small figure imprinted on one of the stones. It was an angel. It was the only one that had a mark on it in the middle of the wall. Kana tiptoed, her legs and arm shaking as she reached for the stone. Finally, she pressed it, and a sound of bolts opening followed. The wall parted and opened to another room. Rows of books greeted her. It was a library. Her mind commanded her feet to step inside but her body hesitated. What if the wall closes as soon as she enters, trapping her inside? Kana rummaged her hair. She's not going to understand anything if she didn't try looking for answers. Her feet migrated from her side to the library. But the wall didn't move. Great. She can still get out. She walked to one of the shelves. They were all courses and subjects. She scanned the books. It was like searching for a needle under a haystack. In truth, it wasn't hard to understand her situation. Her life as a human ended and she was simply given another life in a different world. She is a highborn and have three older brothers with two of them doting on her a lot. Her mother hates her and she hasn't met her father yet. But from the conversation she heard this morning, their father might also be bad news. In short, her life became a drama. It should be fine, right? As long as she keeps her mouth shut about being reborn and being a human once. She closes the book she was scanning. After all, there really are no records of humans existing in this world. She sighed. There's nothing left for her now but to accept and live on, right? So why can't the thing in her chest stop hoping? 'For what?', she whispers. What was she hoping for? Before she could ponder further, darkness engulfed her sight. All of a sudden, she can't move. Her nose scrunched up against a rotten smell. Ropes seemed to have surrounded her small body as a large sack swallowed her whole.
