Chapter 12: Window of Opportunity“Tomorrow?”
“Yes! He said they would come early in the morning, with a van.” I was down in Grendel’s cave, relating what the G-man had told me.
“But—tomorrow?”
I stared at my big friend.
“Yes,” I repeated, not understanding. “Is that important? I mean, I guess they have to do some paperwork.” With a sick feeling in my stomach, I added, “Maybe requisition the van or something—”
But Grendel placed a large fingertip over my mouth, both silencing me and distracting me as well. I took hold of it and kissed it, almost without thinking.
I felt something cold and wet touch my calf. Looking down, I saw Jake looking up at me expectantly.
“What? Oh! Breakfast! Sorry, Jake!” I turned Grendel. “I have to feed Jake. Is that okay?”
