The next morning, excitement buzzed through the campus hallways.
Groups of students gathered around the bulletin board, eagerly reading the newest announcement from the College of Business.
Ariana squeezed through the crowd until she reached the front.
Inter-University Research and Innovation Competition
Participants would represent the university against some of the country’s top colleges. Each student would work under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
The winning team would receive a full academic grant, a cash prize, and the opportunity to present their research at a national conference.
“This is my chance…” Ariana whispered.
As a scholarship student, she knew the competition could open doors she had only dreamed of.
Without hesitation, she submitted her application.
⸻
Three days later…
The selected participants gathered inside the university auditorium.
The dean stepped onto the stage.
“Congratulations to everyone who qualified. Your faculty mentors have been carefully chosen based on your proposed research topics.”
One by one, the names were announced.
Ariana’s heart pounded.
“Ms. Ariana Monteverde…”
She stood.
“…you will be mentored by Professor Kael Villanueva.”
A chorus of whispers spread across the room.
“Seriously?”
“She’s doomed.”
“Professor Villanueva never goes easy on anyone.”
Ariana forced a smile despite the knot in her stomach.
Of all the professors…
Why him?
⸻
After the orientation, she headed toward the faculty building.
She knocked on Professor Kael’s office door.
“Come in.”
She stepped inside.
“You wanted to see me, Professor?”
Kael glanced up from the stack of papers on his desk.
“So, you’ve joined the competition.”
“Yes, sir.”
“You understand that I don’t mentor students who expect to be carried.”
“I wouldn’t have applied if I wanted someone to do the work for me.”
For a moment, silence filled the room.
Then Kael slid a thick folder across the desk.
“Good.”
Ariana looked down.
The folder contained a reading list so long it seemed impossible to finish.
“There are over fifty journal articles here…”
“I expect you to read them.”
“By… when?”
“Monday.”
Her eyes widened.
“Monday?”
“You said you were serious.”
She bit her lip.
“I am.”
“Then prove it.”
Ariana picked up the folder.
“I’ll do my best.”
Kael shook his head.
“I don’t want your best.”
She looked at him, confused.
“I want your discipline.”
⸻
The weekend became a blur of books, journal articles, and handwritten notes.
Sleep became a luxury.
Coffee became a necessity.
By Sunday night, Ariana had finished every article.
Her eyes burned from exhaustion, but she refused to quit.
⸻
Monday morning…
She placed the neatly organized notes on Professor Kael’s desk.
“I finished them.”
He looked at the stack.
Then at her.
“You actually read all of them?”
“Every page.”
He opened one notebook.
Detailed annotations.
Highlighted arguments.
Questions written in the margins.
He turned another page.
Still thorough.
Another.
Even better.
For the first time in years, Professor Kael found himself impressed.
He closed the notebook.
“You exceeded my expectations.”
Ariana blinked.
Was that… praise?
A tiny smile escaped her lips before she quickly hid it.
“Thank you, Professor.”
As she left the office, Kael watched the door close.
Perhaps everyone else saw Ariana as just another student.
But he was beginning to see something different.
Not talent alone.
Determination.
And determination, he knew, could change everything.
