Rain pounded relentlessly against the library’s tall glass windows.
Ariana barely noticed.
She was buried beneath stacks of reference books, typing notes into her laptop while cross-checking journal articles Professor Kael had assigned. Hours had slipped by unnoticed.
The library lights flickered once.
Then twice.
A low rumble of thunder echoed across the campus.
Most students packed up and rushed home before the weather worsened.
Ariana glanced outside.
“Just one more chapter,” she told herself.
She was so focused that she didn’t hear the footsteps approaching.
“You’re still here.”
She looked up.
Professor Kael stood a few feet away, holding several books in one hand. His usual composed expression hadn’t changed, but there was a hint of surprise in his eyes.
“Good evening, Professor.”
“I thought everyone had gone home.”
“I wanted to finish the literature review.”
He looked at the notes spread across her table.
“You’ve made progress.”
“I still have a long way to go.”
Instead of leaving, Kael pulled out the chair across from her.
“Show me.”
Ariana froze for a second before sliding her laptop toward him.
He read every page carefully.
The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable anymore. It was filled only with the sound of rain and turning pages.
Finally, Kael pointed to a paragraph.
“This section is too broad.”
She leaned closer to see what he meant.
“Our research question should be more specific,” he continued. “Otherwise, your conclusion won’t be convincing.”
Ariana quickly typed down his suggestions.
“Thank you, Professor.”
“You don’t have to thank me.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s my responsibility.”
She smiled.
“Not every professor stays this late to help a student.”
For the first time, Kael didn’t have an answer.

Seconds later…
The lights went out.
The library fell into darkness.
A few emergency lights flickered on, casting a dim glow across the room.
Ariana looked toward the windows.
“The storm must have knocked out the power.”
Kael checked his phone.
“No signal.”
“The campus gates might be closed.”
“It seems we’ll have to wait until the weather improves.”
They sat in silence for several moments.
Without the usual classroom atmosphere, Professor Kael seemed… different.
Less intimidating.
More human.
Ariana gathered the courage to ask, “Professor… why did you become a teacher?”
He remained quiet.
She immediately regretted asking.
“I’m sorry. You don’t have to answer.”
After a long pause, Kael spoke.
“I had a professor once.”
She looked at him.
“He believed I was capable of more than I believed in myself.”
His voice was calm, almost distant.
“I wanted to do the same for others.”
“Then why does everyone think you’re so strict?”
A faint smile appeared.
“Because high expectations are often mistaken for cruelty.”
Ariana thought about that.
Maybe everyone—including her—had judged him too quickly.
Outside, the rain slowly began to weaken.
Inside, the silence no longer felt cold.
For the first time, student and professor weren’t just discussing grades or research.
They were simply two people sharing an unexpected conversation.
Neither of them realized that this quiet evening would become a memory they would both struggle to forget.
