Inside the conference hall, students whispered nervously as faculty members took their seats.
The dean stepped onto the stage.
“Before we conclude this retreat, we have an important announcement.”
The room fell silent.
“Each faculty mentor may endorse only one research paper to represent the university in the Inter-University Research and Innovation Competition.”
A wave of surprise spread through the audience.
Only one?
Ariana’s heart sank.
She had assumed all finalists would advance.
Instead, they would now compete against one another.

“I will evaluate your work based on one criterion.”

He looked at each student in turn.
“I do not choose favorites.”

He paused.

“I can’t figure out how to strengthen my conclusion.”
He pulled out a chair—but deliberately left a respectful distance between them.
“Read it aloud.”
She did.
When she finished, Kael folded his arms.
“You’re summarizing.”
“I know.”
“Don’t summarize.”
She frowned.
“Convince.”
Those single words changed everything.
Ariana looked back at her laptop.
Instead of repeating her findings, she began explaining why they mattered.
Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard.
Several minutes later, she smiled.
“I think… I got it.”
Kael read the revised paragraph.
After a long silence, he nodded once.
“Better.”
Coming from him, that single word felt like an achievement.

The dean quietly set the photographs on the desk.

Outside, Ariana walked across campus carrying her research notes, completely unaware that a single anonymous complaint had placed both her future—and Professor Kael’s career—under scrutiny.
