Alvarez pov
My virtual call with Amanda was a total cringe. I laid my head back on the couch, feeling like a teenage boy in love.
"What the f**k did I just do?" I groaned and ruffled my hair. I only hope she didn't sense how uneasy I was.
I had really tried to compose myself, not prepared for the intense mate bond. It was wrong for me to think a virtual call would mean I wouldn't feel the urge to mate her as mine. If this was the case, then I'm toast. Our weekly check-in meeting I had planned to have with her was going to be a breaking point for me.
A knock on the door pulled me out of my thoughts. "Come in." I said begrudgingly. I wasn't in the mood to receive guests. I only hoped it wasn't Waldo though because I wasn't ready to be swamped up with pack duties this early in the morning.
Yes. It was morning in our world. Not really our world per se because we are still on earth. But according to legends, many centuries ago when the werewolf and human world were always at war, a treaty was called for between both parties and they agreed that the only way to bring about peace was to lead one of us to extinction.
It was argued and debated till a powerful wizard came up with a spell that would hide the werewolf world in an invisible sphere, separating us from them. Ever since then, we've lived in peace without interference till Gilbert found a portal that led to the human world which began our adventure as little werewolf boys.
"Hiiiiii…" a feminine voice filled my ears and I stiffened.
I closed my laptop and turned to face Anna with an annoyed look.
Her face fell and I was sure it was because of the look on my face. "Sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you. I can go if you want me to."
I groaned and rubbed my hand over my face. Gosh! That's f*****g manipulative. She knows I can't send her out.
I tapped on the spot next to me on the couch and she smiled in relief before walking forward.
We sat in silence, neither of us saying anything. It wasn't always like this before. We were friends and shared everything with each other whenever I returned to the pack.
"It's about our upcoming mating ceremony." She finally said, breaking the silence.
"Pardon?" I asked in surprise and faced her.
"Wait. You don't know? s**t. I shouldn't have broken the news to you, myself."
"What about it?" A frown was set on my face now. I hadn't discussed my intentions with Waldo yet but he knew better than to begin plans for my mating ceremony without my permission. I couldn't discuss all that was in my heart with him at the party of my coronation when he had informed me that he was set on moving forward with plans for our mating ceremony.
I kept saying today, tomorrow and now, it seems like it's getting late. Enforcing peace back into the pack had been our sole responsibility so there was no time to discuss the mating ceremony.
"My father was discussing setting a date with me. I didn't know he hadn't discussed that with you, else I wouldn't have brought it up."
I stayed in silence for a minute. "Then why did you come here? For the both of us to fix a preferred date together?" Saying it out loud sounded dreadful. I enjoyed Anna's presence in the past before now, but I was now repulsed by everything she did.
My heart and wolf panted after someone else. A human.
"No. It's about us."
"What about us?" I didn't like where the conversation was headed.
"That's right. That's what I don't like and I'm beginning to feel uneasy about it."
"That's right... what? I don't get your point."
"You've been cold towards me since you got back. This isn't how you behave with me." She sounded like she was about to burst into tears. I may not feel friendly towards her anymore but I can't stand to bear the thought of her crying.
"Really? Anna, you know I'm now an Alpha. I can't spend time with you now as before and neglect the pack." I spoke softly to soothe her concerns.
"Yes, I know that but you can't disagree that you don't have spare time. I'm not saying you should spend all your leisure time with me but you know, we can hang out and catch up in each other's life. This is more important because the time is finally here for us to get mated."
My wolf growled in disapproval. I was also pissed at the thought. There was no way I would get mated to Anna.
I didn't even know how to break the news to her yet because she seemed so emotional right now.
"About this whole mating stuff. There's something I would like to discuss with you. I don't know if this is the right time." I guess it's better late than never.
"Why not? It's what we are talking about so what better time would that be?"
I took a deep breath, prepared to deliver the worst. All I hope is that she doesn't freak out and have a breakdown. She asked for this though. "I'm calling off the mating ceremony."
She chuckled but I could sense anxiety in it. "I don't understand."
"I'm sorry, but we can't continue with this betrothal or even get mated." I dropped the bomb, spelling it in black and white.
She stood to her feet slowly and stood before me, facing me directly. "Tell me you're joking, Alvarez?"
"I'm not." I said without blinking, while looking her straight in the eyes to show how serious I was about the whole ordeal.
"Why?" Her voice fell to a small whisper which I could hardly grasp.
"I'm no longer interested in us and whatever the future holds for us both."
"Tell me you're joking." She said again with a cracked voice.
I shook my head in the negative and immediately, she bursted into tears.
"How can you do this to me, Alvarez? Alvarez why? After all our moments together? It doesn't make sense, no it doesn't." She wiped the tears off her face but it was useless as more streamed down her cheeks.
"I'm really sorry to break your heart Anna."
"There's someone else." Her tone turned dark and it startled me. How come about that flip in emotions?
She took my silence and surprised look, for acknowledgement. "Yes! That explains the whole of your sick call off better. Just so you know, I've put in a lot of effort into this and I won't sit back to watch everything go down the drain." She said in a bitter tone and marched off.
