“That’s why I’ve only told you two so far.” “Well, thanks a lot!” Cindy retorted. “We really appreciate it.” The colonel frowned in disgust. “I’m not used to acting like a rat escaping a sinking ship. I’ve never hidden behind other peoples’ backs. Let’s say you’re right and something does happen to the plane. Let’s just suppose. And I listen to you, and out of all the passengers, only my son and I are saved. How will that make us look?” He then answered his own question, “We’ll look like real good guys then!” The feeling of alarm that had hitherto be coming intermittently suddenly became more distinct and pointed to a real and present danger.
