After Genoa the ship headed for Barcelona. Along the way we put in at Livorno, where we took on a load of marble chips, after which we made stops all along the Mediterranean coast: Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Marseilles, and finally Sant Feliu de Guíxols, a provincial port a day’s journey from Barcelona. Without even docking there, we transferred some of the marble chips to the Spaniards by stopping just outside the port and loading the chips onto a pontoon. I naturally continued my research for Division X. I would leave my cabin to work with the crew and perform experiments with homeostats, devices which determine the ability of personnel to work together as a single team.
