Just as I had foreseen, when Captain Sinchenko sent in his complaint, Division X’s own security launched an investigation. I was not formally accused of anything, and they said nothing to me of any suspicions they might be harboring, and I continued to work on secret topics, see patients, and travel to other military facilities on official business. I was no longer sent abroad, though.
As long as the investigation was ongoing, I naturally could not see Cindy. Then, abruptly, my country collapsed like a house of cards, and the investigation ended all by itself. No one cared about me any more. Moreover, rumors were already circulating that Division X was to be disbanded.
