22 By the time Olga arrived back at her quarters, everyone was already asleep. The floorboards gently creaked in the corridor as the junior lieutenant carefully tiptoed over them, hoping that no one would notice. As soon as she opened the door to her room, however, the stern voice of her friend rang out in the dark: “Where have you been?” “I went for a walk. Why aren’t you asleep?” “Like you even have to ask! It’s because of you. How am I supposed to sleep?” “Has something happened?” Kapitolina was indignant. “Ha, you act like innocence itself, like nothing was the matter!” The interpreter quickly undressed, and without even turning the light on, lay down on her bed. She thought that if she just went to bed, her friend would calm down and let her be. This was not the case, however.
