Chapter 7

SAHARA'S POV “I’ve been saying it for a while now, Kol, they're better people in the pack to make alphas. People way better than you are.” As soon as I said the words, I regretted it. The light in Kol’s eyes was a mixture of anger, pent-up anger that he had kept in for so long. He stared at me, and although I was scared, I knew that I had run away for too long. It was time for me to fight, it was time for me to prove to him that I was more than he thought I was. So I stood my eyes, staring into his eyes, daring him, taunting him, and mocking him all with one stare. “Say that again, Sahara.” His words were a snarl and a growl at the same time. It sent a shiver up my spine, but I was ready for it. I had chosen this path, and there was no going back. I wanted to challenge my brother, I wanted to show him that his being the Alpha was a mistake my father had made. A mistake that could be corrected. “They're way better people to be made alphas than you…” The sentence had hardly left my lips when I was struck, his fist knocking the words back into my mouth and shoving them down my throat. The punch that came next was swift. He hit the side of my ribs fair and square, knocking the air out of my lungs. Trying to regain my strength, I went on all fours, biding my time. Taking in air, I lunged, using my superhuman strength. But it was obvious I had underestimated my brother. This was somebody who had represented his pack in several wars. How did I ever think I was going to defeat him in combat? I lunged, but he had already calculated that move. Spinning away from the onslaught, he ducked, waiting for me to lose my balance. As soon as I did, he attacked, slamming an uppercut into my jaw that sent me reeling and flying to the wall next to me. Not willing to give up so easily, I tried again, forging ahead in the fight for resistance. This time around, he caught my neck in one swift move as I lunged forward, then slapped me across the cheek. I was badly hurt at that moment. I stared into his eyes, watching him stare at me with that power, that strength that meant he was in total control now, that nothing could stop him. My eyes widened as he dragged me to the verandah which overlooked the cliff and everything beneath it. Alarmed, I breathed in, knowing it was only right I beg despite my injured state. “Come on, Kol. You're not going to do this. Think about the implications, think about me. We're twins, Kol. The fact that we're not on good terms doesn't mean you should do this to me.” He smiled shamelessly, an evil glint in his eye. “I've observed your tyranny and your trying to usurp me and take my throne for so long, Sahara, to an extent that I can no longer take it. This is why you will not only go, Sahara, you must go. Allow me to enjoy my life as Alpha for once.” And with those words, he flung me down the cliff, letting me fall. The fall was quick. When I landed, the pain was so deep that I only lay awake for a few seconds, observing the rocks around me with an eye that wasn't mine before the whole earth became dark. _____________ KOL’S POV When I let my sister go, my senses finally returned. I came to, looking down at the splattered mess that was once my twin sister. And that was when I knew that I had just made my first and greatest mistake as the Alpha of the Blood Moon pack. Quickly leaving the verandah, I went back to party, looking around and making sure that no one had seen me do what I had just done. It was when the party was beginning to come to an end that I found my mother, happily nodding to the music. “Kol? I can't seem to find Sahara anywhere. I sent her to fetch me some ice for my whiskey, and since then, she hasn't returned. Seen her anywhere?” I shook my head no, caressing her hand and trying to hide my guilt from the evil that I had just perpetrated. It was there in my chest, like a burden, like a weight that was difficult to bear. “Come on, mother. I believe that's enough partying for the day. You should go to your room and lie down. These parties have quite the effect once the noise wears off. Come on now.” Taking her hand, I led her to her room, not knowing if I was doing this to compensate for the fact that I had just murdered my twin sister. She was down there, a wreck of her former self and I doubted she was going to survive it. My mother held my hand, kissing it. “Thank you for such a wonderful birthday party, Kol. I know you and your sister have your differences, but I like the fact that you both decided to keep it in check and focus on making my party a success instead. I'm grateful, my son. Now you can go on, forget me. Go on and have fun. Call Sahara to see me when you see her though.” Nodding, I exited the room, closing the door and leaning on it for a few seconds while I tried to regain my bearings. What had I just done? EMILY'S POV The night pool party was just beginning when I arrived, the music and the drone of the noise telling me that it had been going on for quite a while, but the soberness of the people around told me that it was just beginning regardless.
