I walked out of my mother's room and walked excitedly towards the ballroom on the ground floor of the castle. I needed to be abreast of all the preparations that were being made in advance for my mother's birthday.
As her only daughter, I owed it to her to give her the best of celebrations. If, as I suspected, this was the last year she would be celebrating her birthday, then I had to make it worthwhile for her.
At the last step of the stairs, I ran into the two maids I had met earlier at the back door. However, I couldn't help but notice that their countenance was sour and the drapes of curtains in their hands were different from the gold and white linens I had asked them to clean and use in the ballroom for Mom's birthday.
"What are these linens for?" I asked, nodding to the blood-red and black drapes of linens the maids were holding.
The two maids were shocked to see me standing at the foot of the stairs. No one usually expected me to stand and watch decorations go on. I usually gave instructions and came in to approve if they had indeed done what I had asked. But for today, I wanted to give my mother the best that I could not help but come down here. And somehow, my wolf told me I had done the right thing.
With their heads bowed and looking to the floor, the older maid answered me.
"Princess Sahara, Prince Kol seems to have different ideas for the party. He made some changes to the decorations just now, and the linens here are part of the changes."
Hearing those words my blood boiled with anger and fury. Kol could not be doing this today. I could entertain his nonsense on any other day, but I was taking none of it, today. This was our mother's birthday for God's sake. She deserved the best celebration and decorations. Everyone at the castle also knew that gold and white were Mom's favorite colors. Why would he want to change the colors and put in something else?
I doubted he had any sound reason for changing the curtains except for the fact that he hated any idea that came from me. This was my mother's birthday and I would not let anything spoil the celebration. For that, I was willing to battle this with him.
"Where is he?" I barked at them.
"He is in the ballroom giving out instructions."
I raised the hem of my skirt and marched to the ajar door of the ballroom. The fire in my eyes left everyone who saw me scared. I was a force to reckon with when I was angry and I would not rein in any of my fire when I met my brother today.
Just as I had guessed, my brother was standing in the ballroom, giving directions on what should be done. My anger multiplied noticing the numerous changes he had made in the room. The changes he had made were horrible at best and left a downcast atmosphere in the air.
"What the hell are you doing to this room?" I yelled at him upon getting to the room.
My brother stopped talking and took his sweet time turning to me. The act got me so annoyed that I wished to slap his cheeks, but somehow, the knowledge that he was my twin reined my anger back.
"What am I doing to this room?" He smirked as he laid a condescending look on me. "Well, to answer your question, I am making this ballroom befitting for kings."
"You are not making it befitting for kings you i***t," I yelled as I stepped closer to him, pointing my index finger at him. "You are ruining the plans and perfect decorations for Mom's birthday. You are setting a dull look in the room. You make it look like we arranging a funeral here. This is mom's birthday and the place needs to shine."
My brother stared at me for a moment longer, like I was some mad woman who needed to be thrown into the asylum. He acted like all my ideas didn't matter even when it was very clear that they were the best.
"Dearest sister. You see, while you are right that this is a birthday, you should also be aware that this is a gathering of noblemen, me inclusive. This is not a tea party for naive princesses like you." He said.
My mouth was left open by the insensitivity of his words. I trusted Kol to always undermine my ideas or actions of mine simply because I was a woman and just as good as he was.
"Well, I am a princess, your twin and that makes me just as noble as you are. I know better about preparing the ballroom for celebrations because Mom has taught me all I need to know. While we were much younger, you refused to learn all this simply because you are a boy. Now, leave me alone to do what you have always tagged girl's chores." I yelled back at him, this time around my nose was just inches away from his lower jaw.
Yeah, my brother was taller than me. It was one of the reasons he felt he was better than me. It was a silly reason, just like all his reasons for feeling he was better than me.
"Well, just like you said, it is a girl's chore. But this event isn't child's play. This is a noble event and it needs the touch of a man who has been trained to take care of noble events. It doesn't need the childlike thinking of a baby girl like you." He spat at my face.
My face was contorted in anger that I almost launched an attack on him. I was on the verge of bringing out my wolf and tearing him from limb to limb, but I had to stop myself. This was my mother's birthday and she deserved to see her two children looking well.
"You are so lucky today is Mom's birthday. I swear, I would have killed you and put an end to your tyranny." I spat at him.
My brother made a mocking face at me and laughed out loud. He took a step away from me as he laughed in the air, drawing the attention of everyone who was trying to ignore us.
"Oh my dear sister, you seem not to understand the dynamics of life. If you were capable of killing me and putting an end to my legacy, you would have been set to be crowned as the Alpha of this park next week."
As soon as the words were out of my brother's mouth, my blood went cold and I stood frozen before him without any knowledge of what to do.
This was my biggest pain in life, and he was using it to mock me. For the first time in my life, I had no words to say to my brother.
