shut and lock it because I don’t want any kids running and fighting in here.”
“That would be a good idea…” I agree.
The librarian turns his face up at the loud noise coming outside of the Library door. He slams the both doors shut and lock them.
“And that is that…! That takes care of that little problem.” The Librarians says.
He walks away humming a happy tune and goes back to what he was doing behind the desk. Organizing papers among typing on a desktop computer. I finally settle down a bit and start to recover from my aches and pain. I check my stomach by lifting up my shirt to see it was bruised from Sho Ma’s shovel attacks. I rub my belly and look around at the entire Library. Our Library is kind of big to be a school library. We had a little over ten rows of books. I get the strangest idea. I think since I am in a Library, I might as make the most of it. So I look around the Library wondering where the Occult section is thinking I could find something about Sho Ma or anything about how to stop Demons. I didn’t want to get the Librarian back in a bad mood so I ask him I question him inconspicuously.
“Hey Librarian, do you have a horror section in here?”
“Um, yes we do! It is in the back right corner of the Library.” The librarian says as he points to the back of the Library.
“Thanks.” I tell him.
I hastily depart from the front of the Library and make way towards the Horror section of the Library, inspecting every section along the way. I see all types of different sections but not the section I am looking for. I arrive at the Horror section feeling a deep pit in my stomach knowing that I have demon problems turning to a book to help me find a solution. It sounded silly in head, but I was desperate, so desperate that I would do almost anything to get Sho Ma off of my back. But I had to find out something about Sho ma or demons or both or anything! Man I bet I sound so stupid and helpless….
I get to Horror section and just next to it I find the Occult section. I was excited because I couldn’t believe my silly plan actually worked. I started looking at the many books on the shelves. Didn’t find an elf, but I did find a book about demons. I grab the book without wasting another second and start reading it as fast as I could. I start with the table of Contents, and in it, I see a Chapter about how to defeat demons. I flip right to it and start reading it. I get halfway through the chapter learning a bit of great information about how to fight against demons.
Then all of a sudden, the book starts glowing this black murky water color, and out comes a giant decayed fist and bashes me right in the face. I get slammed hard and blood flies from my mouth as I’m back away dropping the book at the same time. The book falls to the floor with a loud smack and I take a few steps back and grab my face checking to see if I had any teeth missing or loose. But nope I was fine except the blood and pain in my mouth. I look back down at the book, then suddenly I see Sho Ma slowly rise out of the book to full height. I huff and puff loudly then Sho Ma begins to speak. This guy is starting to get really freakin annoying. Why…? My thoughta are interrupted.
“What’s wrong Novell? You thought you were safe in this Library?”
I nod slightly intently, but mouth nothing.
“This entire school is mine for the taking! You are not, nor will not be safe anywhere in its reaches…!” He says then laughs his deep booming laugh.
I get scared after hearing he speak every time. But after he laughs, I hear the Librarian yell.
“What is going on over there kid?!”
When Sho Ma hears the Librarian’s voice, he turns his head to the direction the Librarian’s voice is coming from. And as soon as he did, I make a fast retreat from Sho Ma hashing as fast as I could so I could get away from him. I did not want to fight no more! But I knew in my heart and soul that if was to give in, my life would surely end. I escape Sho Ma, but as I start running to the front of the Library, multitude of random books start shaking briefly, then torpedoing themselves at me. Some books hit me as I am running but others miss me. Books keep pelting me with unreal like accuracy! How could this be happening, I thought to myself?
“This is no chill!”
I cut down different aisles as books slam into my body. I get to the end of one isle and suddenly, Sho Ma’s shovel shoots out the ground in front of me. I don’t even halt or break stride, I just do a U-turn and run back the way I came out of the aisle and make a quick turn to a new one.
After I run down a few more aisles, I get to an isle that is a straight shot away from the exit doors of the Library. So I start running down that aisle making my way to the exit doors. Then without warning and very abruptly, the exit doors burst open on its own! And when it did, in came a lot of kids yelling and brawling each other. They come in in crowds scuffling in chaos.
“What is going on here?!” The Librarian says as he sees students pouring into the Library fighting.
The Librarian walks from behind the counter towards the exit doors. I wondered if he saw the doors open by themselves. With my luck, I am sure that he didn’t. As I get to the end of the aisle the books halt from flying off of the shelves. I stop at the end of the aisle with a confused look on my light skinned face. Why did the books stop, I think? Then all of the kids start to look like Sho Ma to me. So I rub both my eyes with both of my hands balled into fists in disbelief. All of the Sho Ma’s look as if they are focused and staring at me. Then a line of flat versions of Sho Ma appear on each side of me on the book cases. I get so scared I don’t know what to do, so I run all the way out of the aisle to the Librarian counter. Once I get back to the Librarian, all of the Sho ma’s turn back into kids battling. I look around the whole Library to see that a riots of students fighting with no sight of Sho Ma. I get Chills on my entire body, then the Librarian starts yelling at all of the students.
“Hey hey hey, stop this foolishness! Stop all of this fighting! Stop…” The Librarian’s words get drowned out by the yells of agony and battle cries of the students.
The Librarian gets ticked off and run at a crowd of kids and tries to break them up. The Library gets caught in the brawl and gets pelted a bunch of times, so he follows up getting hit with punches of his own. The sight of the Librarian intervening was actually pretty comical to me, especially given the fact that he about fifty years old in age stooping down to the level of teenagers. I chuckle to myself while I watch the Librarian fighting students. I sneak my way towards the exit because kids stop entering just about at the same time the Librarian intervenes. I had to get out of that Library as soon as I could, because to me, it seemed as though Sho Ma was a lot stronger in the Library, than out of it. I start my quick escape getting in the doorways entrance then the doors slam me in the back whacking me out of the Library closing shut behind me. I fly in the air a bit and catch myself on my hands so I don’t smack the ground face first.
“This is really no chill!”
After I catch my fall, I rise to full height and turn my head looking at the closed Library doors to see them glowing red. I knew that the Sho Ma was the reason behind the doors moving on their own. So after I look at the doors and get ready to run, the Lunch Bell rings while I am in mid stride ending the Lunch period. I pause for a few moments until the bell finishes sounding. Then then I run away from the Library onto the Quad. I look around the entire area to see that the riot is still going on and that most of the kids are not going to class. The Quad is close to the school building to enter the class rooms, so I turn around the corner of the Quad to head inside of the building to go to class and as soon as I make turn, I run right into the Principal.
When I bump into the Principal, he gives me this really disgusted look. Like I was repulsive to look at, or like he smelled something that smells worse than trash.
“What are you doing you little hoodlum?!”
I get offended when I hear the Principal call me a hoodlum for some many reasons. The first reason is because normally the Principal was nice to me every time I saw him, but for some reason he was approaching me like I was his enemy. Then to add fuels to the flame, I was not a hoodlum kid and I didn’t just go around disrespecting adults, and I thought the Principal was my more of my ally than an enemy. Also The Principal didn’t even seem like he could fight. He was a really timid guy and spoke with fear in his voice most times. And we even used to have positive conversations like we were buddies.
“Hoodlum!? I’m not no hoodlum!” I tell him with conviction in my voice.
“Yes you are! You see this riot going on?! All of these kids fighting… I bet you were the cause of this!” He says, then he punches me in a retarded fashion.
“I wasn’t the cause of this!” yell back at him.
Then I put my head down shamefully and started thinking. What if I was the cause of this?! What if… What if, maybe all of the recent chaos was because of me!? Because of me being able to see and interact with Sho Ma when no else could. Every time Sho Ma would show his ugly steel headed face when I was around people. It would seem as though no one but I could see him. Although most times he came to me when I was alone. Was I hallucinating and imagining the whole thing?! Was Sho Ma just a figment of my imagination?!I quickly throw that kind of thinking out of my head because I look at all of the bruises on my body as proof that I wasn’t losing my mind. But the fact remained the same that Sho Ma was after me, and starting chaos all around me, targeting me, so maybe I am partly to blame for the chaos… But I never asked for any of this! I never asked to be taking on some demon like I am this strong Demon Slayer superhero! Well, either way, I did not feel too good inside after he told me that. His words hit home, and not in a good way. They hit me so hard that I forgot to react, and did not get mad that he hit me with a punch. He had punched me in the chest, but because of recent pain inflicted on me, and because the Principal was so timid, his punch had no effect on me. It really felt like a baby had hit me, which was sad to say, because it really looked like he put a lot of effort into it. But my intuition was right about how tough a person was, and with I was dead on.
After I speak, we both stare at each other for a few moments, then I break the awkward silence.
“Man you need calm down! I have to get to class.” I tell him.
“Yea you do that young man…” he says still trying to be standoffish.
I brush off his non-want to be threatening presence, and walk around him without paying him anymore attention. I walk into the building, heading to my next class. My next class was on the second floor. I get to my classroom and walk inside it. My teacher is standing by the window frightened. She has a look of horror upon her face. I non-chalantly walk to my seat and sit down, noticing that there are only four other students in class with me seating in their seats. The second bell rings a few minutes later, also known as the Tardy Bell, but my teacher doesn’t budge from peering out of the window. I get up from seat and walk over to my teacher so that I can see what she is looking at. When I get next to her, I observe her staring outside at the large groups of rioting kids still fighting.
“Yo teach, why are you staring at…?”
“Sad, isn’t it…?” she says with sadness in her tone.
“Yea…”
My teacher turns and look at me.
“Who beat you up!?” she says with genuine concern.
“No one…” I say trying to sound cool.
“Well what happened to you?!”
“Nothing… I’d rather not talk about it.”
“Okay, I understand. Well just know, if you ever need to talk to me about anything, I am here for you…”
“Thanks.”
I stand next to her peering at the chaos happening outside in silence until she turns away and walk to the front of the class and begins teaching. I walk back to my desk and listen to her lesson with the four other kids. My mind immediately begins to drift into the land of horrors. I start to envision Sho Ma chasing me up some stairs with nowhere to go, he chases me laughing constantly. My body gets the chills as I envision different scenarios of Sho Ma chasing me down and killing me. Some of my visions end with him possessing me becoming one of his minions. I go through so many scenarios in my head of how this Sho Ma conflict will overall end! And in every scenario I lose, falling to the whim of this demon… My eyes water up because I knew that this demon was coming for my life and he was coming fast! He wasn’t letting up. At this moment, this is when I realized that evil never sleeps, evil never rests. I was tired and I needed rest, but this demon was not having it! This demon was weird and the fact that I saw him in my dreams and kept seeing his shadow everywhere before I actually saw him was tripping me out! I felt weak and feeble, but at least that book in the Library helped me learn a few things about facing demons. One thing that weird book taught me was that all demons feeds on fear, so if you don’t be afraid of them, it weakens them! It may not stop them depending on the demon’s strength, but will definitely weaken them. Being COURAGEOUS the book explained. Also it said evil never rest, I didn’t believe it when I read it, but I do now… but the book concluded to say, so stay on guard at all times. If you stay ready, you never had to get ready. But sadly the book didn’t say anything about how tiring it is to stay ready. The book also taught me that demons take a liking to specific things and whenever you figure it out what it is, that is its weakness and that is a sure way how to combat it. The book also said that magic works really well against stopping, hurting, or killing demons. I was baffled because I had no clue what magic was. To be totally honest with myself, I did not even believe in magic. I was just a teenage kid living in a bad environment with little help of only a couple of friends I had. Through all of this, I knew one thing, and that one thing was the fact I kept telling myself, I need POWER! Having some sort of super powers was the answer to my solution, and I was willing to stop at nothing! But it was the 2012 AD! What was the chance of a teenager like me getting super powers!? Little to none! But knew this was the time to start looking… Most people think money is power, and although in a way it is, the type of power money bring couldn’t help me with fighting this powerful demon. Only a special kind of raw natural energy sort of power could help me. Heh, its pretty silly, how I am talking about myself and my life like it is a Superhero Comic book. Like I am this special character that goes through hardships to gain some type of power and strike down my enemy! This was unrealistic thinking, not totally impossible but highly impossible. Like 1% likely to happen. I mean I did feel like I was a little special. I got good grades in school always. I could fight pretty well for my age, but this didn’t mean that I would be blessed with super powers. I couldn’t lift a car or refrigerator by myself or nothing. Crap, this is so no chill…
I snap back to reality, at the end of my sixth class bell ringing. I was on auto pilot for two classes, this would happen to me sometimes normally, but with this demon on my back, I just couldn’t focus on my assignments. I wrote down a few things snapping in and out of my visions, and I always made sure that I wrote down the homework. Usually school was over by 6th period, but because I was considered special in a special program, and not a special ED program mind you… Because I know the jokes were coming…No, I was in a special program for advanced students which meant I was seen as a student ahead of the other said normal students. Reader I have no doubt you thought I was a Special Education kid riding the short yellow bus with all of this talk of gaining super powers in the year 2012 AD. Ergo, I had to attend my last and final class, the class of horror, Physics with sexually, confused, demented, annoying, Mr. Tatford. I could go on but I’d rather not. Although I loved Physics, I hated going to Mr. Tatford’s class. At least I would get to see my best friend in this class. This was the only class that we had together as seniors. We used to have a class together in 11th grade. But a different kind of fear crept over me every time I stepped foot near or in Mr. Tatford’s class. Every time I had to go to Mr. Tatford’s class, I would take my time getting there, even though he was very sensitive about us being even a minute late. If we were a minute late, he had no problem sending us away from class to the tardy room.
I arrive at Mr. Tatford class with a couple of minutes to spare before the Tardy bell rang. I used to hang out in front of my classes like some punk rebel kid, but as you might have guessed, Mr. Tatford doesn’t go for that. So I walk into class and my best friend meets me at the door.
“Hey bro, what’s up? What happened to you? You look all beat up...”
“Man I’ll explain later.” I tell him as I hold my ribs.
“Well just let me know what’s up if you ever need to talk. Man I’ve been going through stuff myself, very weird stuff…”
“Well what do we have here!” Mr. Tatford says grinning from ear to ear.
“Nothing Mr. Tatford…” I say.
“Well you don’t look so good Novell, is the baby about to cry from his boo boos…?” Mr. Tatford says taunting me.
“No…”
“Well go have a seat, class is about to start.”
I walk away from Mr. Tatford ignoring his pathetic attempt to tease me. I was too tired to indulge in his antics today. Mr. Tatford sees me put a mean expression on my face and walk away from him in silence, so he gets really intimidated. He is so used to me always having a snappy and witty remark that this time he just stares at me in silence.
“I think you ticked him off…” My best friend says.
“Yea, not surprising he is not in the mood. He thinks he is so smart, always trying to be so cool and such a know-it-all. He thinks he is so tuff!”
“Dude, we are teenagers trying to enjoy our life! You are a grown man acting immature like you are still a child, grow up Mr Tatford.” My best friend says sounding cool and mature.
Mr. Tatford got mad when I walked away from him, but got even more angrier from my best friend’s statement that, his face turns red as cherry. Usually Mr Tatford didn’t get red faced angry until at least halfway through the class. The Tardy Bell sounds and not a moment too soon. The class gets settled in and quiet. Mr. Tatford walks to the front of the class just as every teacher normally does to begin their lessons, and begins talking.
“Now that class is beginning, I think I’ll start a little different today…” Mr. Tatford says as his face changes from an angry one to a very sinister one.”
I look over at my best friend because I didn’t like where this was going already.
“Normally I start class with the lesson, but today, I will start class by asking the class, who did my homework last night… By the looks of it, and cocky attitude, I am sure you did my homework Novell… So did you…?”
The class gets noisy as all of the students start shuffling pulling out their homework. My eyes widen in horror as I hear Mr. Tatford mouth those words. I couldn’t believe that I forgot to do Mr. Tatford’s homework! His homework was always the first homework I completed because I did not want to have any after school time with Mr. Tatford. Oh right…! I forgot to do Mr. Tatford’s homework because of my mom saying the f*******n words which had me sleep all weekend! Great! This is just my kind of luck! I can’t believe that… My thoughts are interrupted by Mr. Tatford’s voice.
“Hmmm, I see… By that awkward silence, I can tell that you didn’t do my homework Novell! So you know what that means Novell, You will be staying after class to finish it!” Mr. Tatford yells with excitement.
I sit there in disbelief but immediately look over at my best friend seeing that he has this look of horror on his face as well.
“Did you do the homework?!” I mouth to him silently without making a peep.
My best shakes his head horizontally slightly with disbelief, knowing that he too forgot to do the homework. Mr. Tatsfords homework.
“Settle down class!”
The class gets quiet.
“Well you all know what the consequence is if you didn’t do my homework. So now that we got that out of the way, we can now continue on with our amazing lessons today about Isaac Newton. I loved Isaac Newton but this class period all I could think about was getting my homework done so I didn’t have to stay after class. Normally I be all ears when a teacher is talking about something I enjoy or love, but today I was so nervous. At least I wasn’t staying after class by myself. My best friend was going to be staying after class as well. So if Mr. Tatford tried anything, I was sure that me and him could take him out of his sick misery. So Mr. Tatford piles the class up with work making sure that I nor none of the other kids can do his homework while in class. He is also watching me and my best friend like a hawk making sure we don’t finish our homework before class is over. I finish my work assignment really quick and sneak and start getting my homework finish. Then suddenly out of nowhere, Mr. Tatford starts screaming at me.
“What are you doing Novell?! That had better not be your Homework! Homework is meant to be done at home, not in school! Right now is class time, so now you have to do class work! Get back to your classwork now!”
“Well you said it Mr. Tatford, Homework is meant to be done at home, so can I go home now or have an extra day to do it!” I say as all the entire classroom starts laughing me, then it gets silent really fast as Mr. Tatford glares at me.
“No! You were supposed to have it done over the weekend! That’s why you are staying after class today to finish it! No more back talk Novell, now get back to your classwork!”
“But I am finished with my classwork.” I tell him.
“Well then go to the next set of questions in the next lesson.”
I don’t know why Mr. Tatford yelled so much but he made sure to keep us busy the entire class so I couldn’t finish my homework. After all the long lessons of Mr. Tatford, if was finally time to go home. Mr. Tatford walks by the door and excuses the class.
“Alright class, time to go home! Everyone except Novell and anyone else that has not done their Homework. So everyone that has their homework completed, hand me your papers as you exit the door.”
All of the students except me and three others students exit the class.
“Now, for the rest of you four, you all have to complete my homework assignment before you are allowed to leave my class.”
All four of us all run to a table in the center of the class, open our textbooks, and begin working rapidly on our homework. Then as we are getting our work done, we start whispering to each other.
“Hey how far are all of you on your homework?! Do any of you have any of it done?!” I say.
“I started on it and have half of it completed.” My best friend says.
“I just started on it, so I have nothing done.” The big buff football player says.
“Me too…” the short funny kid says.”
“Well I managed to get one fourth of it done in class but Tatford caught me as you already know. Guys please don’t leave me alone with Mr. Tatford! Only Hell knows what kind of things he has planned for me. So let’s do a buddy system, none of us should be left alone with Tatford. We will all together or two at a time!” I whisper.
All three of the other students agree.
“I hear whispering…! No sharing answers children. Why are you rushing? You kids don’t want to stay after class with good ol Mr. Tatford? We can have fun science activities…!” Mr. Tatford says gleefully in a
