A half hour later, Samantha came out proudly carrying her purchase. “Look what I found. It’s a brank. Sometimes it was called a gossip’s bridle.” I’m sure that it wasn’t one that was actually used in the old Puritan and Pilgrim days, but it was kind of neat. It looked like a heavy metal bird cage with an odd shaped device that was placed in the woman’s mouth. Well maybe I’m being sexist. Men can gossip too, I guess. Anyway the cage had a wide rusty collar that could be locked around the victim’s neck. A few days of walking around in public wearing that heavy thing and being unable to speak would make anyone happy to be dressed up like a German shepherd.
