Chapter 6 - Beach House Take 2

2193 Words
Amelia’s POV I woke up with a start the next morning not remembering where I was as I heard the sound of crashing waves. Does that happen to you too, I am so used to the sights and sounds in my own room I always am startled the first night in a new place. I left the window in my room open last night so the sound was pretty loud and the cool breeze tickled my skin. I’m honestly surprised it didn’t wake me up earlier. I do a big stretch pulling my arms above my head and arching my back then relax my muscles back into the bed. I honestly could stay in bed all day with a good book or my sketch pad, but then I would miss hanging out with everyone. I decide to take a shower and then get dressed in my lightweight blue leggings and a basic white t-shirt. I am planning on starting the day on the dunes with Cove and River. I figure, more clothing coverage will help me not get sand in areas it doesn’t belong, if you know what I mean. I also don’t want to be wet from the water and have all the sand stuck to me, I hate that feeling. So starting with the dunes just makes sense. Once dressed I head to the kitchen and I was surprised that I don’t see anyone. I smell bacon and sausage and all sorts of breakfast foods, so I know I am not the first one up. I grab a cup of coffee and head out back to see if I can find anyone. The closer I get to the back door, I start to hear the sounds of conversation and laughter. They must be eating outside. “There you are sleepyhead” my Dad says. “Yeah, there you are sleepyhead” Jorah mimics my Dad’s words in a sing-song voice, obviously teasing me. “Hey, not my fault you all made the beds so comfortable” I retort. Everyone chuckles and Aunt Julia motions me over handing me a plate, “never mind them, they should all know a women needs her beauty sleep” I just love Jorah’s Mom, she may not be my real aunt, but when you are adopted you learn to make a family. “Then maybe we should send her back up, she obviously didn’t get enough” River says laughing at his own joke. “Ha Ha, you are so funny River. Maybe you should try stand-up comedy” I look at him with a playful glare. I load my plate with a little of everything, okay more like a lot of everything. I’m starved. I take a big bite of bacon and moan it is so good. Cove says with a sly grin, “keep it in the bedroom Ammy” “Whatever” I huff a bit embarrassed. What can I say the bacon is good, I don’t need them making it s*xual. I skillfully change the subject, “I want to hit the dunes today how many sleds did you bring?” “Just two, but we can share. Half the fun is watching the other one crash and burn” River glances at Cove obviously teasing him. “Are you going to do the dunes too Jorah” Cove asks. “Of course I am, someone has to be there to show you how to do it without a crash and burn landing” Jorah replies smugly. Cove smiles as he says, “Oh that is what Ammy is there for” “No pressure or anything” I state. Knowing full well they know I am going to be the worst, not my fault they are all athletes, I know they are just bugging their big brother. We finish up breakfast and help clean up the plates and leftover food off the table. The twins grab the sleds and start dragging them and describing all the tricks they are going to try in a very animated manner. They really are a lot of fun. I can see where living with them, if they were like this all the time, would drive me crazy though but this right here is great. We get to the dunes and you can still see the tracks they used yesterday, nice that it wasn’t too windy overnight to blow them away. I watch as Cove goes first. He does a three sixty turn on the way down and lands with a flop on his back at the bottom of the dune. Next River goes and he shows us the track with the ramp they made. That one looks painful and is a hard pass for me. I definitely don’t need to be sore when I have to be on a plane for twelve hours the day after tomorrow. Oh my god, it really is only one more day, eeek. I go next and by the boy’s standards I was ‘boring as f*ck’ their words not mine. All because I just went down without doing any tricks. I thought is was a blast definitely don’t need to do tricks, but I might try something after a few more runs down. Jorah goes next and decides to attempt the one with the ramp and even attempted to spin in the air off the jump. I say attempted because he landed on his side and got a head full of sand. I rushed over because I thought he hit his head, but he was laughing when I ran up and he swore he was fine. We spent the next hour and a half taking turns. The twins mastered the three sixty spin on the way down and even went down in tandem and were able to do the three sixty turn together side by side with perfect timing, I was impress. Jorah finally got the spin in the air off the jump with a perfect landing and I was happy to just go down with no injuries. We went back to the house for some lunch, we were all starving. Our parents already had a big tray of submarine sandwiches and a platter of fresh cut up fruit. It was perfect. I go to grab a piece of watermelon and my Mom gently smacks my hand away, “I know you are going to wash up first Ames” she says with a raised eyebrow. I smile widely, “of course I was, my hand just had a mind of its own for a moment there.” She chuckled and pointed to the bathroom so I would wash up. After we were all seated around the table to eat, Jorah’s dad says, “so we were talking” and he motions with his hand indicating my parents and him and Aunt Julia, “and we thought it might be fun to go out on the boat this afternoon. We could go out a ways and fish or swim or even a bit of both. What do you kids think?” “Sounds good to me” I say with a smile. “I’m in” Jorah says. “Yeah me too” River agrees. “Well you aren’t leaving without me” Cove grins. After we finished lunch I cleared my plate and loaded it into the dishwasher, then I went up to change. First I put my swimsuit on then added a loose green t-shirt dress as a cover up. A grabbed my favorite black hoodie just in case it gets cold on the water, but I doubt I’ll need it. I tend to run warm and don’t get cold often. I make it downstairs first this time so I help straighten up a bit while I wait. We had left all the blankets all over the couch from our movie night last night, so I folded them all and put them in the basket next to the couch. After I was done I plopped down and took my sketch pad out of my backpack and started sketching the scenery out the window. Not long after, everyone was ready and we walked over to the dock, it was just a short walk from the house. They of course call it a boat, but it is really a yacht. I get on and make myself comfortable on a lounge chair. Jorah sits in the one next to me shoulder to shoulder and asks, “you having fun?” “Of course I am, I alway love spending time with your family. I especially love it when my parents can come too. I haven’t seen them smile this much in a while” I point out, “you think they will be okay when I am gone?” I share my worries. “Of course they will be. My parents will check up on them too. Your Mom has her book club and your Dad was telling me this morning that he was going to finally start working on his Dad’s old mustang he has in the garage. I know they will miss you, but they will be okay too. Can’t stay home forever. Plus it’s only for a year”, he looks at me with understanding eyes. “I know you’re right, I just hate leaving them alone. I was always the one that made sure they didn’t work themselves to death.” I give a wry smile. He bumps my shoulder with his,”I think they realize how much they enjoy the weekends off, I don’t think they will start overworking again.” We sit in comfortable silence for awhile then his Dad comes over to see if we wanted to fish. I opted out of fishing, but Jorah joined his dad and brothers. I pulled my sketchbook back out and drew some jewelry designs that were inspired by the ocean waves. It sure would be nice to have enough money to actually make some of my jewelry designs a reality. I wonder if I could sell the designs. I would rather make them myself, I love working with my hands, but just a chance to see my designs come to life would be nice too. The guys actually caught three fish two blue fin and one red drum. I couldn’t believe how big the fish were the two bluefin were easily 500 lbs each. The red drum was around 90-100 lbs. Uncle Michael said they will flash freeze the bluefins and bring them back to the community to eat. We would eat the red drum tonight. We decided to stay out a bit longer so we could swim. There were even a couple of two person Yamaha wave runner jet skis at the back of the boat that we were able to ride around on. Jorah and I raced Cove and River and we won. Although if you ask River and Cove they would tell you they won. I was surprised when my Mom and dad raced Jorah’s parents. Jorah’s parents won that race , not surprising considering it was my parents first time on a jet ski. We were laughing and having so much fun the whole time, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much and I got a stomach cramp from laughing so hard. We start heading back to the dock when the sun started to set giving the sky a soft purple-pinkish hue. I am so hungry by the time we get back, thank goddess we have snacks. I picked up saying goddess instead of god from Jorah, he always says it and I always respond with ‘you’re welcome’ like he was talking to me as the goddess as a joke. I once asked him why he says goddess instead of god like most people and he just said that if most people thank god he was sure the goddess appreciates a thank you too. That cracked me up, he’s so goofy. I couldn’t believe how fast and efficient Jorah’s dad was at butterflying the fish and cutting it into fillets. He ended up having some flash frozen too, 100 lbs for eight people was just too much. Maybe if he ever quits his day job he could start a new career as fish monger, oh wait he already did retire. Maybe a hobby then, haha. I helped mom make a salad and we decided to bbq some veggies. The fish was cooked over the open fire and boy did it taste good when it was done. After dinner we decided to play some family games. We did Pictionary which was hilarious, somehow everything River drew looked like a d**k. We gave him so much sh*t for that. Even my mom was giving him sh*t.. We wrapped up the night by watching In The Deep, man am I glad we watched that after we swam today. I definitely will not be able to to swim in the open ocean for awhile after that. We all headed to bed after, last night at the beach house and then homeward bound.
