Cassia's POV
I had barely gotten any sleep all through the night, I could have placed a call to Alec or even mindlink him about the news of the pregnancy, but I wanted to do it face-to-face and see the look in his eyes, even though I was still worried about the fact that I couldn't perceive the pup.
I arrived at the office, all the while, it kept playing in my head how Alec was going to react once he finds out that we are expecting a baby, and soon as he takes over as the Alpha, there would be an heir, that way it would be much more easier for the council to accept him.
I placed my bag on my desk once I had settled inside my office, and decided to go get a cup of tea since I couldn't take coffee any longer.
“Good morning, Cassia,” Piper greeted as I stepped inside the kitchen. She stood by the counter holding a cup of coffee in her left hand, a smile on her face.
“Good morning, Piper,” I greeted briefly and walked straight to make some tea. Today is going to be a very busy day for me, and I didn't want to get into small talk for that long.
“Have you heard the news?”
“What news?” I asked, but my gaze was still fixed on the mug since I wasn't so interested in the office gossip today.
“You are saying you haven't heard the news about the Alpha's son?” She pointed out and the mention of Alec was all it took to get my attention.
“What about him?” I pulled my gaze away from the mug and my eyes narrowed towards Piper.
“Our boss is off the market” she smiled, showing she was genuinely happy for him. My heart briefly stopped, and when it did again, it was racing fast, making me confused about how I was supposed to feel about this.
When he talked about making the announcement yesterday, I thought he didn't mean it and might wait until the mating ceremony, as we initially planned to do so.
But if he was trying to surprise me. Then he was definitely doing a very bad job at it.
“You are saying that Mr. Carden is getting married?”
“Yes, he is. Why do you look so surprised? Come on, we all know that in order to take over his father's throne as the Alpha, he would have to get married, and guess what, she is his mate!”
Piper was grinning from ear to ear as she spoke, making me wonder how she was going to react when she found out that it was me.
“How did you know about all of this?”
“Come on Cassia, what world do you live in, everyone in this pack, except you, knows about it, guess you must be living under a rock”
She teased with her last words as a silly smile played on her lips.
“You seemed so certain about this, how can you be so sure about this news?” For all we know, it might just be the usual pack's fake news.
“No! Not this time, it was on national television, this isn't just about the pack but the entire city, and not to mention, the Luna did an interview and accepted all claims regarding the engagement.”
“The Luna?” My heart seemed to have jumped out of my chest in fright. I wasn't sure why this frightened me.
After a while, I finally relaxed, the thought of it still sending shocks down my spine, yet I had to conceal how I was feeling as I listened further.
“This is the best news the pack has had in a while. Even though we all knew he would have to get married, we never thought it would be easy for him to find his mate before the ceremony. Believe me when I say I am sincerely happy for them”
“Yeah…. I also heard she is so beautiful.” I heard a voice speak from behind. It was Talia, my best friend, who had just stepped inside the kitchen and was the only one who knew about my relationship with Alec.
We both exchanged a look as I smiled briefly at her.
“Of course it's Alec Carden we are speaking about here, there is no way that his bride wouldn't be beautiful!” Piper was practically grinning from ear to ear.
I grabbed my cup of tea and was ready to leave the kitchen, but Talia stared at me, perplexed.
“Where are you going?”
“What do you mean, I have to work”
“Can't you hang around with us for a while? After all, you are the boss's wife.” She was standing right next to me and had said those last words under her breath. I rolled my eyes at her and started walking out of there.
I returned to my office but couldn't get my head to work. My head was wrapped around the thought of Alec and how he had easily convinced his mother to accept me to the extent that she was ready to do an interview.
A smile filled my face. Everything was finally coming into place, and once the royal family was aware of the pregnancy, I could finally be with my mate and have him mark me.
I shook my head, trying to shrug off the excitement. I returned to work and had my gaze fixed on the computer for a long while until it was lunch hour.
Just then, a knock came through my door, and it was Mr. Braden's secretary. “Good day. Mr. Braden has requested to see you”
“Oh! Okay!” I responded nervously, hoping that he hadn't been informed of my relationship with Alec so soon, since I didn't want any preferential treatment.
Once she was out of the office, I rose to my feet and followed behind. Stepped right inside the large office where Mr. Braden was engrossed in a paper he was holding.
Mr. Braden was in his mid-forties and was currently the pack's advisor. His position was very important, which made him always tend to abuse it.
I gave a gentle knock, and even without being ushered inside, I just knew that I had to step in, knowing that Mr. Braden was not going to respond to me.
“Good afternoon!”
“Cassia! Have a seat,” He called out informally, which was something he hadn't done before, a look of disdain at me as it trailed down from head to toe, which made me feel so uncomfortable, and I remained standing.
“I have to get to lunch now so I am not going to waste both of our time, The pack's council has come to a conclusion regarding you”
He immediately slid an envelope to my side, but I could already tell that this wasn't going well, so I didn't dare touch it; rather, I wanted to listen to everything he had to say.
“What is this about?”
“They think your services are no longer needed at the council.”
“Okay…..” I was stressed out, still not comprehending what this was about.
“Come on, Cassia, do I have to spell it for you? You are fired!” He finally blurted out, first I froze right there, and finally let out a loud chuckle.
“You think it's funny?”
“Yes, it is, because you can't fire me!”
“And why is that? Because you are sleeping with the boss?” He asked, and my heart instantly froze.
“Oh please don't give me that look, did you think that no one was ever going to find out? There is nothing that goes on around here without my notice.”
“Is that why you are doing this? You are trying to punish me because of my relationship with Alec?”
“This wasn't from me, it was directly from the boss, he asked me to let you go.”
“That is not true!” I sighed and my heart ached as I did.
“Go ahead and open up the letter, you think that I would do anything without any instructions from the boss?”
His gaze was piercing at me, a smirk curled his lip, my hands trembled as I opened the envelope, slowly reading through it, and even though it was written in plain English, it was so difficult for me to comprehend but my heart stopped soon as my eyes glanced at the signature, and it was indeed signed by Alec.
“No! This is not possible!” I gasped for breath, clutching to the piece of paper, unable to fathom what was going on.
“What were you expecting, that because you were f*****g him you have suddenly grown important, come on you are smart Cassia you should know better that you don't f**k the boss, all you need to do right now is pray you don't get banished, else that might be the end of your life.”
“Shut up! You are the one that is getting banished once I speak to Alec and find out that this was all you.”
“Go ahead and humiliate yourself further, I can't wait to see your cocky ass be thrown out of here!”
The smirk on his lips deepened like he was enjoying every moment of my misery. I tore the pieces of paper into tiny pieces and shoved them at his face.
“Go to hell!” I cursed, not able to bear it anymore, as I stormed out of there, slamming the door hard behind me.
Once I was out of his office, tears slowly trickled down my cheek. I could feel this pain in my heart like it was burning and no matter how hard I kept telling myself that this was not true, I knew that Alec was the ‘Alpha in waiting’ and there was no way that anyone would forge his signature.
He did really fired me from the council where I have worked my ass off since the death of my parents, but I knew that the only way to be sure of all of this was to confront him. I needed answers and a way to get them..
Just as I stormed towards his office, I came to an abrupt halt seeing Alec stepped out of his office like he was about going out, his hands wrapped around the waist of a girl next to him, and as my eyes trailed around both of them, my entire world came crumbling right before my feet.
