"Where do you think you are running to, cousins?"
Williams spoke softly to the empty executive office, his gaze fixed on the private jet tracker glowing on his quantum console. The red signal icon representing Jeff and Stefanie's flight was currently taxiing toward the runway of Aethelgard's private airfield.
He did not panic, nor did he rush toward the elevator like a man who feared losing his prey. Instead, he simply reached for his smartphone and dialed a secure override frequency directly linked to the city's aviation authority.
"Ground all private departures from Sector 1 immediately," Williams commanded in a voice that carried the absolute weight of a sovereign ruler. "Issue an immediate airspace lockdown under federal corporate asset protection laws."
"Understood, Mr. Williams. Executing total flight suspension now," the dispatcher replied on the other end, clicking off with mechanical efficiency.
Williams pocketed his phone and turned away from the panoramic window, his mind already calculating their next desperate move. They would soon realize they were trapped inside Aethelgard like rats in a sinking ship, with nowhere left to hide.
He walked out of the executive suite, descending into the lower levels where his armored limousine awaited to transport him to the grand annual charity gala. Tonight was the night the elite of Aethelgard gathered to flaunt their wealth and unearned prestige.
The glittering ballroom of the Grand Aethelgard Hotel was a masterpiece of crystal chandeliers and polished marble floors echoing with classical waltz music. Wealthy socialites and influential corporate moguls mingled freely, sipping vintage champagne while discussing stock market fluctuations.
Jeff and Stefanie stood near the grand staircase, trying desperately to mask the sheer panic consuming their minds after their private flight was grounded. Stefanie clutched a flute of champagne so tightly her knuckles had turned completely white.
"This doesn't make any sense, Jeff," Stefanie hissed under her breath, her eyes darting nervously across the crowded ballroom. "How could all our private assets be frozen and our flights blocked within a single hour?"
"Calm down, Stefanie, someone is obviously playing a very sick joke on us," Jeff replied, though his own voice trembled with undeniable fear. "As soon as we find out who pulled these strings, I will make sure they regret being born."
Before Stefanie could respond, the heavy mahogany double doors at the main entrance swung wide open with dramatic finality. A sudden, oppressive hush fell over the entire ballroom as all eyes turned instinctively toward the entryway.
Williams stepped through the threshold into the brilliant glare of the crystal chandeliers, radiating an aura of chilling dominance. He wore an immaculate bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo that caught the light with every deliberate, unhurried stride he took.
His sharp grey eyes swept across the vast room like a predator scanning a field of helpless prey before locking directly onto Jeff and Stefanie. A faint, razor-thin smile touched the corners of his lips as he began walking straight toward them.
Whispers immediately rippled through the gathered crowd of socialites as people tried to identify the stunningly handsome yet terrifyingly intimidating newcomer. None of them realized that the ghost of the family outcast had just returned to claim his kingdom.
"Look at that man, he looks like a literal prince among kings," a young socialite murmured to her companion, her eyes wide with undisguised awe. "Who on earth invited someone with such an intimidating presence?"
Jeff and Stefanie froze in their tracks, the champagne flute in Stefanie's hand slipping from her fingers and shattering against the marble floor. Their faces lost every trace of color as they stared at the man approaching them like a vision from their worst nightmares.
"No... that is completely impossible," Jeff whispered, taking a panicked step backward until his spine hit a concrete pillar. "We watched him burn... we threw him into the incinerator ourselves!"
Williams stopped just a few paces away from them, his posture relaxed yet filled with lethal readiness. The ambient music seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the sound of their ragged breathing filling the charged space between them.
"Good evening, cousins," Williams said smoothly, his deep voice carrying a chilling edge that cut straight through the festive noise of the gala. "Did you really think a few degrees of heat could keep me away from this family reunion?"
Stefanie’s knees buckled beneath her weight, forcing her to grab onto Jeff's arm to keep from collapsing onto the floor. Her mind spun wildly in a desperate cycle of denial and sheer terror as she stared up into those familiar, piercing grey eyes.
"You... you're a monster! A dead man!" Stefanie shrieked hysterically, drawing the startled attention of nearby guests who began whispering in confusion. "Guards! Someone throw this lunatic out of the ballroom right now!"
Not a single security guard moved to intervene, because every single private security operative in the hotel had already received strict override codes from Aethelgard Holdings. They knew perfectly well who the true master of the building was tonight.
"There are no guards coming to save you here, Stefanie," Williams replied coldly, stepping closer until he towered over them like a dark monolith. "You are standing right inside my house now."
Jeff swallowed hard, struggling to summon a shred of his former arrogance as he tried to shield Stefanie with his trembling body. He forced his jaw to lock into a semblance of defiance, though his eyes gave away his utter helplessness.
"If you are somehow alive, what do you want from us?" Jeff demanded, his voice cracking slightly under the immense psychological pressure bearing down on him. "Just name your price and we will leave this city forever!"
Williams let out a cold, humorless laugh that sent a shiver down the spines of everyone listening nearby. He adjusted his cufflinks with deliberate slowness, savoring every single second of their slow motion destruction.
"Money? You think money can buy back the skin you burned off my chest with acid?" Williams asked softly, leaning in close so only they could hear his deadly whisper. "I don't want your money, Jeff. I want your complete and utter ruin."
The ambient chatter of the ballroom had died down entirely now, leaving dozens of shocked elite guests staring at the dramatic confrontation unfolding before them. They watched in stunned silence as the heirs of the prestigious family trembled before a mysterious stranger.
"You have no proof of anything, you psychotic bastard!" Jeff yelled in desperation, trying to salvage whatever dignity he had left in front of high society. "The police will arrest you for disturbing the peace if you don't walk away right now!"
Williams smiled wider, a terrifying expression that promised absolute annihilation without a single ounce of mercy. He raised his hand slightly, snapping his fingers twice in a crisp, sharp rhythm that echoed through the quiet hall.
Suddenly, the massive crystal chandelier above the dance floor flickered twice before all the lights in the grand hotel plunged into total darkness. Panic erupted instantly among the guests as shouts and screams echoed through the blackness.
"What is happening? Why did the power go out?" someone screamed from across the ballroom, adding to the chaotic noise of the terrified crowd.
Williams stood completely calm in the pitch-black darkness, his grey eyes piercing straight through the gloom to watch Jeff and Stefanie hyperventilating in terror. He knew the absolute horror show was only just beginning to unfold around them.
"Enjoy the party while it lasts, cousins," Williams whispered softly into the dark air right beside Jeff's ear. "Because the real entertainment is about to start on the big screen."
