AURORA
I woke up with a start, my head banged with a splitting headache. I squinted my eyes trying to absorb the rays of the morning sun that spread warmly through the blinds casting its rays, creating a warm ambience in the room.
I cupped my face in my hands, I needed to take pain relief before I would need an ambulance to lift me from the couch. My whole body felt limp and I managed to drag myself to the kitchen. I turned on the kitchen tap and clenched my teeth when the cold water touched my face.
As I washed my face, I tried to recall the event of yesterday, but it was a blur. I tried to search my thoughts and actions for a clue but the more I did the more my head worsened, I sighed. I rummaged through the cupboard and finally found Aspirin, I walked towards and grabbed an ice pack. I placed it on my head and shivered when the numbness hit me.
Just then, my phone rang jolting me back to reality and made my way to the living room, reaching for the phone. It was Emily.
"How are you feeling now, Aurora?" Emily's voice echoed through the receiver.
"I feel slightly better except for the banging headache that threatened to slit my head, I-." Just then it dawned on me.
"Em, how'd you know I was in a fix?" I asked, my tone laced with curiosity.
Emily chuckled. "Oh, you were quite the sight at the bar…". I sighed at her words
"When I received your text, I kinda figured you might need some rescuing. So I took some time off work and went straight to the hospital," She added. Out of the both of us, Emily was stronger and could handle situations and hold her liquor better than I did. "But I wasn't at the hospital at the time you came,"
"Thanks to the GPS, your location was on and it was easy to locate you," she added.
I tried to fight back the tears that threatened to roll down the corner of my eyes, I had been so hurt I couldn't get a grip of myself. I hated life, I hated living.
I inhaled deeply and cleared my throat, "Thank you so much," I said with a shaky voice.
"You don't have to thank me…" She paused. Her tone turned more serious, "So, what's next Aurora do you have any plans of finding another job or you want to keep drenching yourself in shots," she teased.
I let out a dry laugh, "Of course not…" I replied, settling into the couch, holding the icepack close to my head, "I'll just check up sites for a vacancy maybe as a front desk officer or a janitor not like I have much of a choice," I stated.
From the other end, I heard Emily laugh heartily, "What's funny?" I questioned, absolutely not finding any of this funny. I needed a new job and I needed it fast.
"You're in luck, my dear. I happen to know of a job opening somewhere that might interest you,"
My eyes widened in surprise, I leaned closer to the phone. "Tell me more, Emily. What kind of job?"
She sighed, "I'll send in the details in a minute, then you'd find out for yourself… take care," she said and hung up without getting a response from me. My phone beeped and my heart skipped a bit when I saw the number and the description, Ziona groups.
I clasped my fingers and muttered a little prayer, before I dialed the number. For some reason I couldn't phantom. I was nervous to ring this number. I summoned courage and pressed send the phone rang for a while and just as it was about to enter the mail, someone picked up.
"I'm sure you're part of the applicant for the job," a woman responded.
I nodded, "Yes ma'am, I want to apply for the job at your company… Ziona," I said, mouthing the name of the company like it was delicate.
She chuckled softly, "Well, it's not mine… but that's not your job." She said, obviously making me confused by her words.
"I-I-I don't understand," I stuttered.
"You'd apply for the job at Ziona… but the job is undercover to what you'd be doing," the soft voice echoed through the receiver's end.
I sucked in a breath, "Then what would I be doing?" I asked, now skeptical of this job that looked like I was going to be undercover.
"Good question, you'd apply for the job as Lincoln Brown's secretary but your main job is to tame him," the voice said, but firmly.
I placed the ice pack gently on the table, "Tame him?"
She paused, "Yes tame him, not like he's the worst person on earth, maybe a bit rash Yes, but there's definitely good about him,"
"So what am I supposed to do?" I questioned and it was then I realized how nervous I was. Different thoughts ran through my mind, was I going to be answering to a psychopath? Was he a rehab patient?
Even though I needed the job, I didn't think this was the one for me, "Are you there?" The voice questioned, cutting through my thoughts.
I shook my head and made my decision, "I'm sorry I don't think I'm interested in that sorta job,"
"Lincoln isn't a bad person and he's not a r****t if that's what you're scared of. He won't also kill you," she remarked.
I shook my head in disapproval as though she could see me, "I'm sorry, I can't," I made to hang up when she said in a collected voice.
"The pay is twenty thousand dollars with a part payment of Five thousand dollars when you resume,"
My eyes widened in shock, the amount of money I heard ran shivers through my spine. This was more than I needed to offset my mom's medical bills and start a new life… go back to college.
I was too stunned to speak, "I umm… Can you give me time to think about it?" I asked,
"Time is what we don't have dear one,"
I took a deep breath and stared at mom's picture on the table at the corner of the room, "Fine, I'll do it… I'll take the job,"
"Just what I thought, I'll send you everything you need. Go for the interview and then we'll talk," she said and hung up.
