II. Decisions

I sat at the dinner table, the clinking of silverware and the soft murmurs of my family the only sounds in the hushed atmosphere. I took a sip of water, the cool liquid doing little to soothe the apprehension that gnawed at me. As we began eating, I couldn't shake the weight of the conversation I had been intending to initiate regarding our family's business. It lay heavy on my mind, a pressing concern that begged to be addressed. But before I could broach the subject, my father spoke, his words a harbinger of unforeseen change. "We were thinking," he began, his tone measured as he set his utensils down and fixed his gaze on Elias and me. "I didn't want you kids to get bothered about our business while you're still in school," he continued, the lines etched on his face conveying a note of concern. I paused mid-chew, my attention rapt as I awaited his next words. "Well, you kids won't stop getting worried about it anyway, even if I tell you not to,” he added, a faint weariness shadowing his features. It was clear that this matter weighed heavily on his mind, a weight he sought to shield us from. As he continued, carving through the pork with a deliberate precision, his words left me dumbfounded. “I think it would be best if I send you kids to a university out of town next semester.” he declared, his words echoed in the ensuing silence. My eyes widened in incredulity, mirroring Elias' own astonishment. "WHAT?" I blurted out, my gaze swiveling towards our mother in search of affirmation, seeking a lifeline amidst the dizzying surge of emotions. "MOM?" My voice trembled with a surge of anxiety, my eyes imploring her for an explanation, a reassurance that eluded me. “I think it's for the best, honey," she replied, her voice carrying a soothing note of understanding. "Your dad wants you both to enjoy your youth before getting yourself involved in matters you'll be handling for the rest of your life.” Her words washed over me, each syllable laden with a sense of resignation and wisdom. Turning my gaze to Elias, I was met with an expression of disbelief mirrored on his features. "But, Dad, I'm already...." Elias began, a note of protest lacing his words. Before he could elaborate, Dad interjected, his words sweeping over us like an unyielding tide. “Enjoy being free and be with people, Elias. I know the enjoyment you mean is when it comes to business matters in school,” he stated with unwavering conviction, a stark reminder of the intricate ties that bound us to our family’s business. Elias and I were poised to voice our dissent, yet our father's commanding presence seemed to stifle the words in our throats. “You both will enjoy being free. The business world isn't something you can leave that easily once you enter it.” he reasoned, his eyes alight with unwavering resolve. The weight of his words hung heavy in the air, their gravity leaving us ensnared within an uneasy silence. Our protests lay unspoken as the weight of his decision settled over us like a suffocating shroud. As we lapsed into a heavy silence, my thoughts churned, a tempest of apprehensions and uncertainties consuming my mind. The impending upheaval—being uprooted from our current lives and thrust into an uncharted territory—loomed large, casting its long shadow over my future. Despite the faint murmur of hesitation that lingered, Mother’s gentle reassurance offered a glimmer of solace amidst the disquiet. “University isn't just about learning, it's about exploring and having fun too. I know you'll both enjoy.” she offered, her words carrying a tender optimism that sought to quell our mounting trepidation. "Dad, I won't get bothered anymore," Elias protested with a mischievous glint in his eye. "You can send Eleanor away instead." he continued, a smirk playing on his lips. I quickly turned to face him, my eyebrows furrowing in mock annoyance. I knew he was only joking, and his light chuckle confirmed it, drawing laughter from both our parents. I couldn't help but admire the harmony between our parents, especially our mother, Ophelia. She had always been a source of inspiration for me—sweet and gentle, yet a powerhouse of strength and independence. She had been a model at the same company where our dad worked, and her ability to analyze the outcomes of decisions was unmatched. Her grace and intelligence were just a few of the many admirable qualities she possessed. As I watched her laugh alongside Dad and Elias, I felt a surge of gratitude for the remarkable woman who had raised me. Despite the playful banter, it was evident that mom's wisdom and resilience had shaped our family dynamics, making our bond unbreakable. As the evening wore on, the weight of my father's decision continued to gnaw at me, its implications looming large in my mind. The prospect of an uncertain future, coupled with the entwining ties of our family’s legacy, left me grappling with a tangle of conflicting emotions. In the quiet lull of the evening, a sense of foreboding hung heavy in the air, and I found myself adrift amidst a sea of uncertainty.
