Chapter Five: First Shadow Strike

733 Words
The sun hasn’t rise, but Ava had already woken up. Her chest felt tight, bubbling with the reminder of last night’s memories. Her visions had come again, flashes of shadowed halls, whispered names, and the weight of promises made centuries ago. She shivered and wrapped her jacket tighter around her. Today, she knew, would not be ordinary. At school, the hallways seemed alive and noisy with nuance. Shadows lingered where none should be. Ava’s stomach twisted, an instinctive warning she couldn’t ignore. “Feeling nervous?” a familiar voice said. Ava turned and saw Luca leaning against the locker next to hers, golden eyes scanning the crowd. His presence made the tension in her chest both sharp and thrilling. “I… don’t know what’s happening,” she admitted, her voice low. “Something is coming,” he said, his gaze intense. “I can feel it. And it’s drawn to you.” Ava swallowed hard, remembering the alley, the golden eyes, the pull she couldn’t resist. “What do I do?” “You stay close,” Luca said simply. “And you trust yourself.” Lunch came, and Ava tried to focus, but the shadows didn’t stop. They seemed thicker now, almost forming shapes that moved just at the edge of her vision. She felt them reach toward her, whispering, testing, waiting. Suddenly, a figure lunged from the corner of the courtyard. Not human, not entirely. Its form flickered between shadow and mist, and Ava froze. The world seemed to slow as the creature advanced. Before she could scream, Luca was there, placing himself between her and the shadow. His presence was like a shield, warmth radiating from him, golden eyes blazing. “Step back,” he commanded. The shadow hissed, recoiling slightly, but it did not retreat. Ava felt something stir deep inside her, an instinct, a memory, a power she didn’t understand yet. Her hands flinched as the shadows grew closer. The creature lunged again, and instinctively, she raised her hands. A wave of energy burst out from her, sending the shadow staggering backward. Her heart pounded. She looked at Luca, breathless. “I…I did that?” He nodded, eyes wide with both awe and something else she couldn’t name. “Yes. You did. That was your power.” “I didn’t even know I had… power!” Ava exclaimed, both terrified and exhilarated. “You always had it,” Luca said softly, brushing a wet strand of hair from her face. “It was sleeping. And now it’s awake.” The creature hissed and dissipated into the mist, but Ava felt the weight of what had just happened. She was no longer just a girl trying to survive high school. Something ancient had awakened inside her. Something that Luca, and perhaps the shadows themselves, were drawn to. Her pulse raced not just from fear, but from the nearness of Luca. His hand brushed hers as he guided her away from the courtyard, and the contact sent shivers down her spine. Not desire in a way that scared her, but something deeper, a magnetic pull, a recognition, a longing that belonged to a time long before this life. That evening, Luca met her near the old oak tree outside school. He had a small, leather-bound book in his hands. “This is a guide,” he said quietly, flipping it open. “For what’s coming. You need to learn control, Ava. Your power isn’t just energy. It’s tied to who you are… who you were.” Ava stared at him, both nervous and exhilarated. “Teach me?” she asked. “I will,” Luca said, golden eyes locking on hers. “But you have to promise me… you will not hide from it. Not from me or yourself.” Ava swallowed, feeling tension in her chest tighten. “I promise.” She replied Then, Luca took her hand, leading her into the forest behind the school. The mist clung to their legs as they walked, the air thick with magic. Ava could feel it throbbing around her, alive, aware. As they walked in deeper into the woods , her heart raced not from fear, but from the closeness of him, the warmth of his hand, the quiet strength he emitted. Every step, every glance, each whispered instruction carried a tension that made her chest ache and her pulse quickened.
