The woods behind the school felt different at night.
Not scary in the way horror movies were scary, but alive. The air was thicker, heavy with a quiet energy that made Ava’s skin tingle. Moonlight filtered through the trees, casting long shadows that shifted when she wasn’t looking.
Ava stood still, her hands clenched at her sides.
“This is where you train?” she asked, trying to sound calm.
Luca turned to face her. In the moonlight, his golden eyes looked almost unreal. Softer than usual, but deeper. Like they were holding secrets he carried alone.
“No one comes here,” he said. “And nothing can hear us clearly. It’s safe enough.”
Safe enough.
That phrase made her stomach tighten.
Ava hugged herself. “I still don’t understand what I’m supposed to do.”
“You already did it once,” Luca replied gently. “In the courtyard. You reacted without thinking.”
“That was panic,” Ava said. “I didn’t plan that. It just… happened.”
He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “That’s how it starts. Power doesn’t ask permission. It responds to emotion.”
Her pulse jumped as he stopped in front of her. Too close. Close enough that she could feel his warmth, smell the faint trace of something clean and unfamiliar.
“And what emotion was that?” she asked quietly.
Luca held her gaze. “Fear. And instinct. And something older.”
Her chest tightened at the word older.
He lifted his hand slowly, not touching her, just hovering inches away. Ava’s breath caught anyway.
“Close your eyes,” he said.
She hesitated, then obeyed.
The forest faded. The sounds sharpened. Every rustle of leaves felt louder. Every breath felt deeper.
“Feel your heartbeat,” Luca said. “Do not fight it. Let it lead you.”
Her heart was racing. Not just from nerves. From him.
“I can hear it,” she whispered.
“I know,” he replied softly. “I always could.”
That sentence sent a strange ache through her chest, like something had shifted into place.
“Now imagine the shadows,” Luca continued. “Not as enemies. As something that listens.”
Ava frowned slightly. “Listens to what?”
“To you.”
She focused. The darkness around them seemed to lean closer. Not threatening. Curious.
A warmth spread through her palms. Her fingers tingled, almost buzzing.
“I feel… something,” she murmured.
“That’s it,” Luca said, his voice low and steady. “Do not be afraid.”
Her breathing slowed. The warmth grew stronger, spreading up her arms, settling deep in her chest. Images flickered behind her closed eyes. Moonlight. Stone walls. Hands brushing in secret. A promise whispered against her ear.
Her breath hitched.
“Luca,” she whispered.
He stepped even closer. “I’m here.”
She opened her eyes.
For a moment, the world shifted.
The forest wasn’t the forest anymore. It was layered over something else. Towers. Torches. A night sky filled with unfamiliar stars.
And Luca looked the same.
Her knees weakened.
“I’ve seen this before,” she said shakily. “This place. You.”
His jaw tightened. “Yes.”
“You loved me,” she said, not knowing why the words came out, only that they felt true.
The silence stretched between them.
“I did,” Luca said finally. “And I still do.”
The words settled heavily in the air.
Ava’s heart pounded. Desire, fear, confusion, all tangled together. She had never been looked at like this. Never been wanted like this. Not just her body, but her soul.
Before she could respond, a sharp sound cut through the forest.
A snap of branches.
Luca’s body tensed instantly. He moved in front of her without thinking.
“Stay behind me,” he said.
The shadows between the trees thickened, pulling together, shaping themselves into something wrong. Too tall. Too thin. Eyes glowing faintly from within the dark.
Ava’s fear surged.
And with it, her power.
Light burst from her hands, uncontrolled and bright. The creature shrieked, stumbling back as the darkness around it cracked.
Ava gasped, stumbling forward. Luca caught her, his hands firm on her arms.
“Easy,” he said, steadying her. “You did well.”
Her breath was uneven. Her body felt warm, sensitive, alive in a way she had never felt before.
“I wasn’t scared,” she said slowly. “Not like before.”
A corner of his mouth lifted. “That’s because you’re waking up.”
The creature dissolved into mist, leaving the forest quiet again.
Ava looked up at Luca. Their faces were close. Too close to ignore what pulsed between them.
For one dangerous second, she thought he might kiss her.
She wanted him to.
Instead, he pulled back slightly, restraint clear in his eyes.
“Training is over for tonight,” he said. “If we go any further, things get complicated.”
Her cheeks warmed. “They already are.”
He met her gaze, something dark and longing flickering there. “That’s what scares me.”
As they walked back toward the edge of the forest, Ava knew one thing with certainty.
This was no longer just about survival.
It was about desire.
About memory.
About a love that was waking up with her.
And somewhere in the darkness, something was watching, waiting for her to make a mistake.
