After Claire sent me a text message containing the address of the club, I took a cab there. As soon as the driver pulled into the parking lot, I could already tell the place had a large crowd for the night. I threw a nervous glance about the room, hoping that there wasn't a TV camera concealed somewhere nearby that was trying to film a few politicians' daughters engaging in inappropriate behavior. But then I was reminded that this trip to Turkey hadn't been extensively known, which was the reason why Claire had decided to go out in the first place. We should not have had any problems at this point.
I thanked the taxi driver for his service and then paid him.
He pocketed the money. "I hope you have a good night."
Someone whistled at me as I was getting out of the taxi before I had even taken my first step outside. I couldn't help but c***k a grin as I shot the door back and turned around to see none other than Claire Kurt approaching in my direction. She wore a short red dress that suited her auburn hair as well as heels that were so high that I would have fallen flat on my face if I had worn them. She also sported a big smile.
"Hello, gorgeous," she exclaimed, skipping over to me. She had to lean over even more than usual in order to give me a hug because the heels she was wearing made her stand much taller than usual in comparison to me.
I hugged her back. "Hey dear, you gorgeous being that you are. Looks like you're ready for some fun."
"And you know it!"
We joined our arms in a circle and then walked into the club, where we intended to consume alcoholic beverages and enjoy ourselves by dancing the night away.
* * *
By the time we were on our third drink, we had already spent at least forty minutes straight on the dance floor with various males who couldn't seem to take their eyes off of us. They gave us drinks and made some lovely promises, but we laughed them off, perfectly happy to tease them without getting too serious with the situation.
"Damn, sexy. Permit me to get you something to drink—or something much better, if you know what I mean.
When I turned around on the dance floor, the person who was standing behind me immediately gave me an unpleasant impression. Even though he wasn't particularly ugly, I couldn't help but be repulsed by the predatory vibe that emanated from him the moment I laid eyes on him. He looked at me with a hungry gaze while biting the corner of his bottom lip.
"No, thank you," I responded, making an effort to be nice despite my refusal. Even if the guy hadn't been such a creep, I was well aware that I was reaching my limit and didn't need another drink at this time; otherwise, I ran the risk of passing out in the restroom and having to spend the rest of the night cleaning up my vomit.
"Oh, really? Come on. He said while reaching out to touch me. I was able to dodge his hands in a hurry.
"Back off," I yelled at him as I turned my back on him. Before continuing on in his search for his next target, he muttered something, calling me some ridiculous name, and then moved on.
I flinched and quickly scanned my surroundings, looking for Claire. Nevertheless, as my gaze traveled throughout the club, something else entirely caught my attention. As soon as I noticed someone staring at me intently from the bar area, I froze on the spot. My chest tightened up for a split second, and I could feel a tremor going all the way through my body. A handsome stranger lifted his head just slightly, acknowledging me from afar.
In spite of the pounding on my chest, I diverted my gaze and looked for Claire once again. I was able to spot her from a short distance away; her arms were around the neck of some guy, and she was twirling her hips to the beat of the music that was playing. She had the guy's whole and undivided attention.
I headed in their direction. Thanks to my diminutive stature, I was able to duck beneath their arms and fit in the tight space between them. The man looked down at me, initially shocked, then amused by what he saw below him. His grin grew across his face like if he had just won the lottery, and it's possible that he was under the notion that he was getting a deal that gave him two things for the price of one.
"What exactly is going on here?" Claire asked.
"Do you happen to see that guy who's over there at the bar? Hey, don't look! You can glance, but you shouldn't make it too obvious that you are doing so. You know—take a peek behind the curtain."
Claire continued to dance, twirling around in order to conceal the direction in which she was looking, until she finally managed to catch a glimpse of the bar. She did another spin around me, at which point she forgot about the other guy she had been dancing with and wrapped her arm around mine.
"Are you talking about that smoking-hot guy who's been standing at the bar and eyeing you up?"
“Yes. Oh…my…god. He is gorgeous."
"All right, why are you over here with me? You should talk to him over there!
I couldn't help but shake my head, and the whole idea gave me butterflies in my stomach. "No, I'm not able to... "
"So, Maya, what are you going to do? Just keep looking at him the whole night?"
“Yes. I don't know whether I can take much more than that at this point."
"Well, that's just not acceptable and you know it." Claire grabbed my arm, much to my horror, and before I could object. She started drawing me toward the bar while I was under the impression that she was going to lead me through some kind of line dance. In his direction.
She put on a fake cough for effect. "I think it is time for me to pay a visit to the ladies' room. You'll see me...eventually" She smiled, arched her eyebrows, and then vanished around the corner, leaving me just a few steps away from the handsome stranger, who was even more attractive when we were face to face.
I stood there, unsure of whether or not I wanted to thank Claire or kill her; I suppose I would have to wait to see how the rest of the night played out before I could make a decision.
As my heart raced, I inched my way closer to the bar and eventually came to a stop at the guy's side, all the while doing my best to act as though he wasn't the reason I was there in the first place. Despite this, I could sense a flush spreading over my cheeks as soon as I felt him looking at me.
Even though I wasn't thirsty, I felt like I had no choice but to get another drink once. I made a decision to choose something light so that I could sip it gently.
However, the bartender was really busy with other customers, so I had to wait a little before I was served.
I could see in the corner of my eye that the charming stranger was inching his way closer to me. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't help but sneak a peek in his direction. My legs were on the verge of giving out.
He had the height of a deity and big shoulders to go along with it. His eyes were a gorgeous shade of blue, which stood in striking contrast to his jet-black hair, which was cut short. One of his tattoos was visible through the gap in the sleeve of his shirt.
