The next morning, Professor Cael announced a mandatory class on mate bonds.
"Perfect timing," Nova muttered. "Right before we do a dangerous ritual."
"Maybe it'll help," I said.
"Or make you more nervous."
We filed into the classroom with the other students.
Professor Cael stood at the front, looking serious.
"Today we're discussing one of the most important aspects of wolf life. Mate bonds."
Students shifted uncomfortably. This was always an awkward topic.
"First, let's clarify terminology," Professor Cael continued. "There are two types of bonds. True mates and chosen mates."
She wrote them on the board.
"True mates are rare. Perhaps one in a thousand wolves. The bond forms automatically when two compatible souls meet. It's instantaneous. Undeniable. Unbreakable."
