14Few would have considered them capable of killing seven human beings although, if the facts had ever come to light, some might have offered feeble, desperate psychological hypotheses that barely hinted at the motives behind the slaughter. Yvonne managed to suppress the wounds of her childhood ordeal. However, she never viewed her parents, church—or any adults, for that matter – in the same way again. Even the abundant charms of her little city by the shore lost their luster. She still sunbathed on the lazy white beaches of Lake Michigan, but not to enhance the cool refreshing dip in the water that washed away heat, sand, tanning oil and perspiration.
