30Bob and Yvonne lay in each other's arms all night, wide awake. They spoke little, only short phrases. "We did right, didn't we?" "We had no choice." "We saved a boy's life." They said these things over and over. It wasn't that they didn't believe it. They simply failed to grasp the magnitude of what they had done. It left them totally numb. They considered turning themselves in, throwing themselves on the mercy of the law, but there were other people's fates to consider other than their own, most of all their two children, Matt and Christy, who could spend the rest of their lives with their parents out of the picture.
