Chapter 2

Sophia’s POV Roman and I sat across from each other in a cozy café, the aroma of fresh coffee and baked goods filling the air. "Why can't I accept the case?, Can you explain why?” I asked, leaning back against the plush cushion of the couch. "It’s because..." Roman hesitated, her tone uneasy as she began to explain the situation. "That's interesting," I murmured. "Who are the parties involved?" Roman hesitated again, glancing at me nervously. "I guess it doesn't matter if you find out." I tilted my head slightly, curious. "Both parties that hold this case are big shots in the business world. This case involves a lot of tangled matters; their relationship is complex. The one requesting your help is Mr. Hunter, his rival." She hesitated again and sighed deeply, almost regretfully. "His rival is your ex-husband, Blackthorn. It seems like the case just isn't meant for us. Honestly, it's torture knowing how much they are offering and not being able to accept it." My breath caught. For a brief moment, I forgot to breathe, I didn't respond immediately, instead pulling out my phone and running my finger along its edge. My thoughts swirled chaotically, but I kept my face calm. "Don't be sad," she said gently. "With your reputation, I'm sure you will get plenty of other cases. Besides, Sophia, are you really divorced?" I lifted my head and met her gaze. "My life is better without him," I said firmly. "You've finally come to your senses. You did so much for that trash, but he never appreciated you. Honestly, babe, I'm proud of you. Leaving him is the best decision you ever made." Before I could respond, two familiar figures strolled into the café, and my mood soured instantly. Even without looking directly at him, I recognized the sharp line of Aiden's tailored black suit and the gleam of his silver cuffs. His cold azure eyes were dressed in an angelic white dress. "Sophia, what a coincidence.” We divorced barely a day ago, and now he is parading with his mistress in public. He has no shame. Roman noticed my shift in demeanor and glanced at the door. Her expression turned icy. "What are those two bastards doing here?" I muttered. Unfortunately, my voice was a little too loud. Aiden's piercing gaze locked onto us, his face darkening with recognition. What was he thinking? That I had come here to stalk him? That I was playing hard to get him? His arrogance knew no bounds. I met his glare head-on for a moment before looking away, uninterested, and grabbing Roman's arm. "Let's go," I said curtly, standing up. But before we could leave, a syrupy voice called out, "Sophia, you are here too." I stopped in my tracks, my hand tightening around my purse. His mistress approached us with a smile so sweet it was almost nauseating. Her wide, innocent eyes sparkled with fake sincerity. If I hadn't known better, I might have fallen for her gentle act. Too bad I did know better. This was the same woman, my cousin, who had spent the last month sending me "accidental" messages of her and Aiden together, their intimate photos meant to taunt me. I turned to her and gave her a smile of my own, though mine carried an edge of mockery. "Dehila, you already came back from your study. That is so good." A few nearby customers glanced our way, intrigued by the conversation. "Yes, I thought it would take a little longer, but I love it this way. So I can have time to run my career very well," she said sweetly, turning to him with a look of adoration. I bit back my laugh and raised an eyebrow. "Really." The murmuring around us grew louder as curious onlookers began piecing things together. "Everybody knows that we've got a divorce; the whole city knows about that," they began to gossip among themselves. The whisper reached Aiden, and I saw his jaw clench in irritation. His anger spilled over as he turned back to me. "Sophia, you've clung to me so long, and now you are here pretending to be different. I mean, like something didn't happen between us." I crossed my arms, suppressing the fire burning in my chest, and gave him a smile. "Regret? What exactly are you going to do to make me regret, Mr. Blackthorn?" "Or do you think I will come to you to apologize for your wishes? Your mistress needs to snap some brain into your head. I have moved on, Mr. Man." His eyes burned with fury, and I didn't give him the satisfaction of waiting for a response. Grabbing Roman's hand, I brushed past them and walked out of the café without looking back. I barely glanced back as I walked, but I could hear Dahlia's stunned, fiery voice. "Thank goodness you are dumping that trash. She is absolutely unworthy of you," she said to Aiden. But I acted like I didn't hear anything. "Roman, did you mention that Aiden would have to pay tens of billions if he loses this lawsuit?" Roman blinked, momentarily confused. "Yes, why do you ask?" A small, knowing smile tugged at my lips. "Roman, I need you to contact Hunter. Let's prepare to start the paperwork." Roman's mouth fell open in shock. "Wait, are you taking revenge on Aiden because of what just happened?" My eyes hardened. "You said it yourself. The past is gone. Soon, I won't be Mrs. Blackthorn anymore." Roman studied my resolute expression, still not fully convinced. "Are you really going through with the divorce?" "Yes," I said firmly. "I've already accepted this case. I won't back down."
