Sophia's POV
I received a call from Roman, informing me about a meeting with a client downtown. It was already the next day, and my mind felt overloaded with thoughts. I couldn't return to my ruthless ex-husband, and if I were to consider Janet's words, it would be after the court proceedings. I had already accepted Hunter's case, and there was no turning back.
When I arrived at the location, Roman opened the door for me. As I entered the boardroom, I was surprised to see an old friend, Jade, who was one of the clients whose case I had won years ago.
"Miss Paige, welcome. A friend of mine needs your help, which is why I invited you. I told him you are the only lawyer who can win the case," Jade said.
I stepped into the room and felt Aiden’s gaze settle on me. His expression flickered with surprise as he took in my appearance—tall, slender, with my long brown hair tied in a neat bun and soft curls framing my face. My light blue corseted dress accentuated my figure, hugging my curves just right.
I met his gaze with a composed smile and took a seat across from him. "I hope I haven’t gone to the wrong room."
Jade's eyes shifted behind me, and he knew I had spotted Aiden. His realization dawned quickly, and his expression became momentarily unreadable.
“You’re Paige?” he asked, his tone carrying a trace of astonishment.
I nodded, watching as he processed the information. His skeptical smile did not waver, but there was an unmistakable flicker of intrigue in his eyes.
Jade cleared his throat, his voice slightly awkward. “Mr. Blackthorn, I wasn’t fully aware of this situation at hand. Do you both know each other?"
Aiden's expression darkened slightly, his sharp eyes narrowing. “So, you’re telling me the top lawyer I’ve been trying to appoint is my wife?”
I smiled and corrected him smoothly, “Ex-wife.”
Despite his usual composure, Jade's brows lifted slightly. “Ex-wife?”
I extended my hand to Aiden. “Mr. Aiden, I am Paige. It’s nice meeting you for the first time. I hope we can work well together,” I said with a touch of sarcasm. He shook my hand, his grip firm yet measured. However, he did not appear internally stable.
"You didn't tell me I would be meeting Aiden here," I whispered to Roman, who was sitting beside me.
"I didn't know he would be here. I'm sorry, Paige."
"Why the sudden divorce?" Jade enquired, staring at both of us.
I bristled beside Jade, my voice laced with indignation. “Mr. Aiden is a greedy man.” My voice was gentle but firm, cutting him off before he could say another word. I met his gaze briefly, silently warning him not to bring up my personal matters.
Turning back to him, I spoke evenly. “Mr. Aiden, I understand how important this case is to the Blackthorn family. As I'm not available for it now, I would never play around in my career. You might not trust Sophia, your ex-wife, but you can trust Paige. I have no reason to jeopardize my reputation.”
Jade studied me for a long moment, then chuckled. “About this case—Hunter has a good lawyer on his side. No one can beat him, except for Ms. Paige. He is a very powerful man.”
I chimed in, smiling. “That’s right, Hunter is a force to be reckoned with. Only Ms. Paige has a chance against him,” Christian added.
I looked slightly at all of them, it didn't matter how urgently they needed my help—I couldn't render it. I had already accepted Hunter's case.
"Mr. Aiden, I'm sorry we won't be able to work together," I said as I stood up from the boardroom. "Mr. Jade, may I use your restroom?"
"Of course," he said, leading me through the passage to the restroom. Sitting in the boardroom, the feeling was unbearable; my stomach was churning as if I had eaten something that didn’t agree with me. I rushed towards the sink and threw up. I rinsed my face and threw up again. I hadn't eaten this morning, and I didn't know what was wrong with me.
"Nice meeting you again, Mr. Jade," I ended the meeting abruptly and headed to my car. My breath shallow and the sunshine glaring, I couldn’t tell Roman what was wrong. I headed home, dropping her off halfway.
Heading straight to the hospital, the doctor ran some tests on me. "Miss Paige, congratulations, you are three months pregnant."
My heart ached as though it were being ripped apart, making it hard for me to breathe. What did he just say now? "f**k," I muttered, kicking over the nearby chair.
The weight of the words washed over me like a tidal wave. Pregnant. Three months. For my ex-husband. My mind was a whirlwind of emotions—shock, disbelief, confusion, fear, and something else. Something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
As I sat there, I felt my heart pounding, each beat echoing in my chest like a drum. My head was spinning, trying to process the information. How could this have happened? When did it happen? And what would I do now?
How would you feel if you discovered you were pregnant, but your husband, who should be your main support, doesn’t care about you, but your cousin. I feel so unwanted.
“You need to take it easy,” the doctor advised, “Your blood pressure is slightly high.” But how could I take it easy? My life had just been turned upside down. The thought of being pregnant, of carrying my ex-husband’s child, was almost too much to bear.
Amongst the chairs, my phone rang—it was Roman. "Paige, the court has set a date for our meeting. Let's finalize this case. But may I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Are you sure about this? Are you really willing to divorce Aiden?"
The question hit me like a chilling gust of wind. I clenched my fists, my heart aching. The response caught in my throat, I couldn't find the right words to say.
