********* went to Building 46 in search of Mr. Fan, whom the Study Abroad office had identified as his point of contact for studies outside of his department.
He traveled up and down the fourth floor, especially quiet just after 9 a.m. and could not find an office #444. The offices of Building 46 typically had a small, square window in the door. The dorm room doors typically had peepholes. Sam happened upon a single, unmarked room where #444 should have been that had neither. Sam knocked, and no one answered. A Congolese student poked his head out of a door perpendicular to what should have been #444.
‘There’s no one there,’ the student told Sam, startling him. The student spoke in Chinese, the lingua franca of that moment, although both had grown up speaking French
