Chapter 2: The Start of Training A few days after submitting the application, Li An received a notification from the company's HR department—he had been selected to participate in the high-difficulty training program. This opportunity was a key moment for him to reassess himself and change his fate. Despite the skepticism and sarcastic comments from many of his colleagues after the news spread, Li An silently made up his mind: this time, he would prove himself. On the first day of training, Li An felt unprecedented pressure from the start. He and the other participants stood at the company’s rented training site, facing the stern and cold training coach Liu Gang—a retired special forces soldier with a sharp, hawk-like gaze. He stood in front of the group, his voice booming, “Every day here will be an extreme test. Whether you can stick it out here will determine whether you have what it takes to become the core talent of this company.” His gaze swept across everyone, as if selecting soldiers on a battlefield. As soon as the coach finished speaking, the first challenge of physical training began—a 10-kilometer run to be completed in 30 minutes. Although Li An exercised occasionally, this high-intensity training made him feel overwhelmed. The scorching sun baked the ground, and sweat ran down his forehead into his eyes, stinging so much he couldn’t keep them open. He gritted his teeth, his legs feeling as heavy as lead, with every step becoming incredibly arduous. He watched the group getting further and further ahead, almost ready to give up. But just then, a soft yet firm voice came from beside him, “Come on, we’re a team, don’t fall behind.” Li An turned to see Xiaoya, her workout clothes soaked in sweat, but her eyes shining with determination. Li An took a deep breath, a surge of competitiveness rising within him. He told himself he couldn’t drag the team down, couldn’t allow himself to be a failure anymore. He fixed his gaze on the path ahead, forcing himself forward step by step. As his breathing grew more labored and his heart felt as though it would burst from his chest, he didn’t stop until, at the very last moment, he crossed the finish line and nearly collapsed. “Well done, Li An.” Xiaoya ran up to him, handing him a bottle of water, a slight smile on her lips. Li An, panting heavily, took the bottle, feeling an unprecedented sense of satisfaction. He had completed the challenge, and for the first time truly felt the power of teamwork. Initial Collaboration and Clashes The evening’s project planning simulation was another tough test. The coach assigned each group an urgent task: to draft a marketing plan in a short time and present it to the coach and evaluators the next morning. Chen Zhi, the team leader, was assertive and quickly assigned tasks, but Li An was given the most basic job of organizing materials. Chen Zhi clearly didn’t have confidence in his abilities, and Li An knew it. Halfway through the project discussion, Chen Zhi’s proposal was questioned by Wang Qiang. The two of them clashed, the atmosphere growing tense, with their words becoming increasingly confrontational. Li An sat aside, gripping his pen, struggling internally. He had some ideas, but his lack of confidence made him hesitate, fearing he’d be laughed at if he spoke up. Just then, Xiaoya stepped forward. She spoke calmly yet firmly, “Everyone, let’s calm down. We’re a team and should work together to find the best solution. Why don’t we each share our ideas first, and then we can analyze them collectively?” Her words helped Chen Zhi and Wang Qiang cool down, and the atmosphere gradually relaxed. Watching Xiaoya’s composure, Li An couldn’t help but feel disappointed in himself. After returning to his seat, he decided not to hesitate any longer and quietly prepared more thoroughly. He researched extensively, identifying several potential issues with Chen Zhi’s proposal and tried to come up with corresponding solutions. He stayed up all night, organizing all the materials and thoughts, and the next morning, he mustered all his courage to present his ideas to the team. Unexpectedly, after hearing his analysis, Chen Zhi looked surprised, then nodded and patted his shoulder, “Didn’t think you had these insights. Well done.” In that moment, Li An felt a weight lifted from his heart. The sense of recognition filled him with encouragement, and it also made the other team members see him in a new light. New Motivation Through the planning exercise, Li An realized he wasn’t useless; he had the ability to contribute value to the team. The team’s recognition and Coach Liu Gang’s praise gave him an unprecedented confidence. He knew that only by constantly pushing himself could he truly find his place. In the following days, Li An devoted himself entirely to the intense training. He gave his all in every aspect—physical training, project simulations, teamwork. Though the process was grueling, Li An gradually found direction amidst the initial confusion and unease. The rapport with his team members grew stronger, especially with Xiaoya, with whom he developed trust and understanding. Whenever Li An felt like giving up, Xiaoya was always there, encouraging and supporting him. One night, after training, Li An and Xiaoya sat by the edge of the training field, a cool breeze blowing gently. Xiaoya looked at the starry sky and softly said to Li An, “I once thought about giving up too. Every time I felt too tired to continue, I thought I couldn’t make it. But it was the support of my teammates that kept me going. Li An, you’re the same—we will both become stronger.” Li An looked at Xiaoya, warmth spreading through him. He nodded firmly and said, “Yes, we will both become stronger.” Despite facing both physical and mental challenges, Li An never backed down. Time and again, he stood up from the brink of collapse, and each time, he grew more resilient. For him, success was no longer an unattainable dream but the result of countless moments of perseverance. This stage of training marked an important moment of awakening for Li An. He was no longer the overlooked, insignificant character; he was becoming a mature and strong newcomer in the workplace. His transformation had only just begun.
