Erick
There is a loud banging at the door, but I don’t want to answer. I can hear my baby sister’s voice complaining about the noise before she dashes through my room opening the curtains.
“The door was locked,” I say rubbing my hands over my face. She doesn’t seem to care and comes over to my bed pulling off my sheets. “What do you want, Stella?”
“Didn’t you hear Arthur almost knocking your door down?! He’s pissed with you, Erick, you haven't left the room in four days!”
Stella is fuming, throwing things around the room, and kicking dirty clothes on the floor. She must have picked the lock otherwise I know Arthur would have broken the door. I look for him as I sit up on the bed, but I guess he just sent my sister in and walked away.
“Erick, please, you have to get over it!”
Get over what? Does she even know what she is talking about? My wolf rarely talks to me, but today he is in a very bad mood and I have a splitting headache.
“Dad wants you to attend a meeting with Moon River…” I get up to stop her but she is the one who stops me, shoving a hand on my face earning a growl from my wolf. “I don’t wanna hear it! I don’t care how you feel about Vanessa! I’m just standing here as your sister telling you to man up and face Dad! You are the Future Alpha of Cedar Woods, and it’s time you start acting like it!”
I don’t know how to react to it. I can feel her wolf reaching out to mine in submission, pleading with him not to rip her head off for being so disrespectful. Troy wants me to grab her by the throat, but she gives me big puppy eyes once she realizes what she’s done.
“At least take a shower, please?”
It's not like I could k**l my sister, but Troy's constant growling is annoying. Our eyes lock for a second before I get up and go to the bathroom.
"You look sharp!" Mom says as I walk into the kitchen. "I'm glad to see you shaved and combed your hair. Such a handsome man my son is."
I can't help but smile at my mom's words hugging her and kissing the top of her head.
"I told you I could convince him to clean up nice!" Stella punches Arthur's arm as if they've been arguing about it. He rolls his eyes but there is a shadow of a smile on his lips. He notices I noticed.
"Nice of you to show up." Arthur is already holding a beer and gets another one in the fridge. He throws it to me and I just give a nod.
"You boys sure you should be drinking?" Mom sighs looking at us in concern.
"Can I have one?" Stella looks at Mom with puppy eyes and pouty lips while Arthur takes her hand and leads her away from the kitchen without another world.
Mom stares into my eyes, holding my face in her hands. We both stay silent for a moment, and I notice her eyes glazing, before I drop a kiss on her forehead.
"Come on, honey. Please..."
"I know, I'll behave."
We are the last ones to get to the dining room and I have to shove Troy to the back of my mind to keep him from growling at my dad and our guests.
Mom takes her place on my father's right. Uncle Keaton, my father's younger brother and Beta, seats on his left.
I am supposed to sit beside Mom, but my father gives my place to our honorable guest, Alpha Rolan Sinclair, and his family.
I end up sitting across from my sister, who tries to smile and soothe my mood, which becomes awful as I sit beside Vanessa.
"It's nice to see you, Erick." Vanessa's voice is silky and seductive, but it does nothing for me; quite the contrary, it makes me nauseous and annoyed.
"Sorry, I can't say the same," I say low enough that only she can hear, but Arthur clears his throat loudly and throws daggers at me, indicating he heard it.
Stella touches his arm for about a second, then pulls away. He barely acknowledges her and just brushes it off.
"What the hell, man?!" We don't even need a mind link, I know that's what that glare was saying.
"Always charming..." Vanessa rolls her eyes at me. "Your birthday is coming, right? Twenty-three? When will you stop stalling and take your father's place?"
"When I find my Luna."
She frowns upon that, and I can see Arthur angrily cutting his food. He would be Alpha already, but he insists on being my Beta.
I hate having Vanessa sitting by my side, the way she laughs too loud to get attention; how she brushes my arm with hers; how she keeps invading my personal space by rubbing her foot on my leg.
I am relieved when dinner is over and Father calls only the men into his office. Mom takes Vanessa for a walk on packland and I notice Stella fuming being dragged with them.
The subject is always the same; they think I need to take the Alpha title, but they also know that Troy is a feral wolf and needs a mate to keep things in check.
Not a mate, my mate. My Rosalie. Troy growls lowly in the back of my mind. My Rosalie. I take a deep breath and agree with my wolf, we've known Rosalie is our mate since the day we first met. Arthur puts a strong hand on my shoulder and gives me a slight shake, bringing me back from my thoughts. Time to endure another scolding from my father and Alpha Sinclair.
