“I can see on your face how happy Nathan made you. Why did it end?”
“He told me in the beginning that he would never leave Mary—his wife—because he would never do that to his boys. I respected his feelings because, well, I’d felt the same way myself, at least until my children were much older. We became very close, very quickly. He told me things he said he hadn’t told anyone else, including how his wife complained about him.”
“He felt safe with you. Just as you did with him.”
She nodded. “I know there are two sides to every story, and of course, he never shared his mistakes with me, but some of the things she said to Nathan… You’ve seen him.”
“I definitely wouldn’t kick him out of bed.” Betty Lou smiled devilishly.
Lela laughed. “I know, right? Betty Lou. Mary called him ‘gross.’”
