Chapter Twelve Nathan was quiet when he came back after his two weeks with his boys. Lela gave him space to sort out his feelings because she knew, at least from what he’d shared in their text and phone conversations, it had been a very difficult Thanksgiving. One morning after coming home from the inn, she settled onto her couch with a cup of tea and called Betty Lou. Her friend answered on the fourth ring. “Well, hello, Lela! How’s the inn business?” Her voice was happy and strong. Lela smiled in spite of her somber mood. “It’s slowed down a bit—the holidays, I guess. How are you?” “Fine, just fine. My grandkids are keeping me busy, the little devils.” She chuckled. “How’s Nathan?” “Thanksgiving didn’t go well, from what he’s told me.” Lela gazed out one of her living room windows.
