Chapter Fourteen Lela felt one hundred years old as she walked back to the bungalow the next afternoon. She hadn’t slept a wink the night before and had just barely dragged herself through her morning routine at the inn. Everything was quiet when she opened the front door. Her stomach dropped when she found her letter crumpled on the floor of the kitchen. She ran to check the guest room, finding the drawers and the medicine cabinet in the bathroom empty. She didn’t have it in her to look, but she imagined he’d probably also removed everything from the barn or would in the next few days. She called Betty Lou sobbing, explaining what happened. Betty Lou tried to comfort her, but Lela didn’t want to be comforted; she wanted to hurt until she was numb, so she couldn’t feel anything anymore.
