Maggie The public library hasn’t changed much since I was little. The same polished wooden shelves. The same smell of old books and coffee. The same quiet that somehow never feels lonely. Mrs. Bennett looks up the moment I step inside. Her face immediately brightens. “Maggie Walter?” “Yes, ma’am.” She comes around the desk and shakes my hand warmly. “It’s lovely to see you again.” “You too.” “You’ve grown.” “So I’ve been told.” She laughs. “Well, come on then.” Her office is small but cozy. Books line almost every wall. Two framed photographs of her and her dog sit on her desk. The interview begins with easy questions. School. Grades. Availability. Previous jobs. Then comes the question I know is coming. “What happened at your last job?” I hesitate. I could lie.
