CHAPTER 2: MATE!

2028 Words
CASSIA’S POV: It is forty-five minutes into the last class before the lunch break and everyone is already exhausted and famished. Worst of all, it is a Biology class and the teacher just keeps talking and I keep having this little war with the sleep in my eyes. My case is worst because I skipped breakfast and right now, I’m so hungry that I can’t even think straight. The most pathetic thing is that I don’t even have up to five dollars on me to buy myself a good lunch, so during the break, I'll just have to get something very small and eat. My life is not a very easy one. The moment the bell goes, the entire class gets rowdy and I quietly start packing my books in my bag. “Yo, Cassia!” A familiar voice calls out as the person approaches me. “What now, Drake?” I ask in a bored tone as I carry my school bag and look up at him. Drake is a tall blonde-haired guy who has a reputation for terrorizing the rich kids from the Royal section. He hates them and many teachers have tried to get rid of him, but he has proved to be a hard nut to crack. I like him, mostly for the fact that once in a while, he teaches those spoilt brats the lesson of their lives. He’s also very brilliant and I can bet that in the future, he will not serve in any high-ranking official’s house, but he will be someone great. “Easy there, tiger, just wanted to congratulate you for standing up for yourself earlier today. I was told you roasted that daughter of a pillock in the hallway” He says with a proud smile. “Well, what can I say? I learn from the very best” “Keep it up cupcake, keep it up” He encourages as he leans forward and places a gentle kiss on my forehead. “I will do just that" “That’s my girl” He turns to walk away but halfway, he stops in his tracks and looks back at me. “What?” I ask almost laughing and he creases his brow like he just remembered something that left him bewildered. “Does she really stink?” He suddenly asks and the entire class bursts into laughter, including me. I tiredly lower myself on my seat and laugh even harder when he walks out. Everyone on this side of the school is a whole vibe and I love them. My other mates adopt the conversation and in less than no time, the entire class is talking about what happened in the hallway. For some odd reason, I feel proud, because I didn't only defend myself, I defended everyone in this class and section of the school. My phone vibrates in my school bag and when I take it out, the notification reads that I’ve got a text from Marcus. I quickly unlock my phone to read the text and when I do, I have out a heavy sigh of frustration as I rise from my seat and exit the classroom. I head over to the school cafeteria and when I get in, I spot Marcus seated at a corner with two trays of food before him. He has bought me lunch, again, despite all the warnings I’ve been giving him. We are both struggling and I hate it when he spends his money on me. “Marcus, I thought I told you not to buy me lunch again” I reprimand in a firm tone as I sit across from him at the table. “There was no change, so I got two trays instead. I’d rather you eat my money than that rude ass cook” He explains carelessly and I just shake my head because I know he is lying. There was clearly the change to give him, he just wanted to buy me lunch. “Come on, Cassia, don’t tell me you’re gonna be mad at me. p Please, I promise it won’t happen next time” “This is the one-millionth time you are telling me this!” I sneer between my teeth as my eyes turn yellow. “I mean it this time” “You are impossible,” I say in defeat as I start eating the food. His stubbornness saves me from starving every day. “I heard you are making the headlines” He speaks out and immediately, I understand what he is talking about. “That was nothing” I assure him. “Of course, it was… You roasted a…” “CASSIA OSCAR!” An authoritative voice calls from the door of the cafeteria and when I turn to look, my heart falls into my abdomen when I see the son of the Gamma, Nero and three other goons standing at the door with deadly looks on their faces. Soon, Delicia walks in and that’s when it all collects in my mind. She has brought her boyfriend and other goons to avenge what I did to her in the morning. The cafeteria falls in dead silence and I gulp dryly and watch in horror as the four fellows march towards Marcus and me with a very furious-looking Delicia leading the way. “This is the tramp who said those mean words to me” She reports with a shaky voice. She’s still terribly shaken by what I said to her in the morning. What a cry baby. Nero steps before her and looks down at me with pure hatred burning in his eyes and I make sure to maintain eye contact with him. To be honest, I’m terrified that he’s here and I know he’s going to mess me up, but I’m not going to let him do that without a fight! “I heard what you did to my girl” He enunciates with a menacing tone and nods with a tiny smile. “You heard well” “You really have some nerve to talk back at the daughter of the Zeta, you know?” “I only talk to daughters who meddle in affairs that do not concern them. Your girlfriend is a blabbermouth and needs to be put in her place once in a while.” I fire back and I can see the guy's eyes change from brown to yellow. He’s so angry that his wolf wants to take over him. “How dare you!” He sneers in anger and raises his hand to hit me, but Marcus holds the hand from behind as he rises from his seat to match up Nero’s height. The other goons step forward to attack Marcus but Nero stops them with a hand show. “And who are you?” Nero questions Marcus but he does not say a word and that further enrages Nero to a point where he hits Marcus hard in the face. Marcus doesn’t hesitate to return the punch and when he does, Nero loses balance and falls to the ground as blood starts oozing from his nostrils. His friends fly over to Marcus and hold him still. Marcus tries to fight them off but they are just too strong for him. Nero, on the other hand, rises from the floor and starts punching Marcus in the face. “Stop!” I cry as I go over to Nero and push him away from Marcus. “Leave him alone, your fight is with me and not-” My words are cut off from my mouth by the feel of a heavy smack that sends me flying across the room to the other end of the cafeteria. Marcus lets out a loud howl as he struggles to break free from the guys but to no avail. When I see Nero approaching me, I quickly rise on my feet and run out of the cafeteria into the school compound. Nero does not stop, he keeps chasing me around and I run all the way to the boundary that separates the two sides of my high school and that’s when I notice that I’m stuck. The only way for me to escape from him is by running into the Royal section of the school to hide and without hesitation, I do so. Once I get into the gate, I rush into the toilet for males where I lock myself up in one of the toilet rooms and stay quiet. I’m just going to wait here for a few minutes for the dust to settle and when that happens, I’m going to go straight home. But for now, I hope no one finds me here, because if they do, then I’m finished completely. A few minutes pass by and out of nowhere, the sweet smell of melting chocolate mixed with vanilla fills my nostrils and I close my eyes and inhale deeply without even realizing that that’s what I’m doing. My heart starts palpating in my chest and my body suddenly feels giddy. Myla, who is usually very calm and still, starts sprinting in my mind and I get all confused. Soon, I hear footsteps approaching the toilet I’m currently hiding and it seems like the closer the person gets, the stronger the scent becomes. I want to open the door and see who it is that smells so nice and intoxicating at the same time, but I know better than to do so. I will be punished severely if I’m caught in here. The captivating smell keeps ransacking my mind and I keep inhaling and begging my heart not to hop out of my chest. At this instant, I’m feeling things I have never felt before and I’m scared to the core. What exactly is going on? “For how long do you intend to stay in there?” A deep masculine voice asks from outside and my heart falls into my abdomen. Fear spikes up in my heart and my ears start itching. Beads of sweat fall down my cheeks and my palms suddenly get all sweaty and my breaths are short and shallow. “Come out now, will you?” The person demands and I start walking towards the door. It appears to be a student. Maybe he will have mercy on me when I explain what happened. I stop and take one last deep breath of the chocolate and vanilla smell mixed with a sweet manly cologne before opening the door. When I do, my gaze is on the floor and I start looking at the guy from his shoes. I'm awed by the pair of black Bolvaint shoes that sit below the pair of well-ironed black trousers he has on. The lines of his trousers are perfectly straight and the edges are as shard as a blade. My eyes trail from his shoes, up to his trousers and I smile when I see the Gucci Marmont leather belt holding it in place. The white long-sleeved shirt he has on is as white as an angel's wing and perfectly ironed too. Now, for the final reveal, to see the face of this young man who is not only rich but has got a taste in fashion, I lift my head up to look and my breath hitches when I see who the person is. It’s Alpha Lucius Amias, son of our current Alpha. The Alpha prince. I take a step backward in shock when my gaze locks on his. Icy blue eyes hold my hazel ones in place, intensifying by the second. The sweet smell of melting chocolate and vanilla fills my nostrils once more and my heart starts palpating. Alpha Lucius and I stand there, looking at each other for over two minutes and he suddenly inches closer to me. When we are just a few inches away from each other, he leans into my neck and breathes in my scent like his life depended on it. “Mate!” He whispers and all my senses fly out of my brain when Myla confirms to me that he is our mate.
