Chapter Eighteen

1885 Words
Hannah The look Julian Gave me as he opened the door was unreadable, I had thrown my phone away guiltily but that didn’t explain the look on his face, half anger, half as if he was about to accuse me of something. It was almost as if he knew what my father had text me. Which may well be the case. I hadn’t actually given much thought to the fact they might be monitoring my communication with the outside worlds. It was a very real possibility seeing as I couldn’t leave. Still if that was the case, they would know my answer to my father had been a big fat GET LOST just in politer words. No one told dear old daddy to get lost. What he had sent me had set my heart racing and not in a good way either. I know what they are, and I need your help. Trust my dad to put me in a beyond awkward position with two people who I had to admit I was rapidly falling in love with. I don’t know what you are talking about dad, but I won’t spy on anyone The texts had been rapid fire, with his becoming more and more angry. Let him, I wouldn’t tell him s**t but even I had to admit he last one had me worried. We are all in danger Hannah and you being romantically linked to them is just making matters worse. They will never let you leave alive, none of us will if you don’t help me. Choose your own kind and stop being pigheaded. Was my relationship with the twins endangering my family? I hoped not. They may drive beyond insane, but they were my family. My life choices shouldn’t put them in danger. Not ever. You didn’t do that to the people you loved and even with all my griping I did love them. “Everything ok?” Julian nodded curtly. I hadn’t seen that hard set of his jaw since that first day. The cold look in his eyes .it made me shiver that he would look at me like that again. “Brother?” Alexander was awake, his face worried as he curled up against my side, his arm tight around my waist. “Another child has been found” Alexander moved so quick I almost missed it. One second, he was by my side the next he was striding towards his brother. “Found?” I knew my voice was small, but I couldn’t seem to make it any stronger. There was a feeling in my stomach, like a pit had opened and I was about to fall down its never-ending depths. “Bear shifter, only a cub, a little one” Julian’s voice was angry. “Another one of our young kidnapped by humans so they can experiment on them” He almost spat the word Human out, making me flinch back. “The cowards can’t take an adult, so they take our children” “That’s awful” I whispered. And it was, why would someone be kidnapping children and torturing them? Why would anyone human or shifter do such a thing? “Humans did this?” “Who else would it be” His voice was rising. The wrath he was known for showing itself for the first time in so long. “It’s always humans” “Brother” Alex’s voice was outraged, he glanced at me a small smile on his face. “Stop shouting at Hannah, she didn’t kidnap anyone” Julian turned on him with a snarl. “They make me sick” Ok that was enough, I scooted off the bed, the side furthest away from him. I didn’t think he would hurt me. Those days were over, but I couldn’t be one hundred percent sure and that was a a scary thought. Even if he wouldn’t I couldn’t sit around and let him talk about my species like that. If he hated Humans that much than our whole relationship was a lie. I could feel the hot burn of tears in my eyes, but I wouldn’t cry in front of him. This pathetic human at least wouldn’t do that. Angrily I started pulling my cloths on. Yesterdays panties and dress. There wasn’t a chance in hell I was walking round naked. “Hannah” I didn’t need to turn around to know it was Alex who was talking. His voice pleading almost. “Hannah, he doesn’t mean you!” that did it. I didn’t get angry often but when I did it was always like a lid flying off a boiling pot. I turned to them, my red hair flying, and I knew my face was contorted. “No just me entire species right Julian? “I fumbled around. Where the hell was my bra. They had flung my clothes every where last night. Me naked between them had been all they wanted then and now humans were disgusting. I threw up my hands, screw the bra, I had others down the hall in my own room. Away from them and their utter bullshit. “Hannah” Julian looked shocked. “No” I held my hand to him. “Do you know what screw this whole situation and screw you as well” I padded to the door, dress gaping in the back, my hair sticking up in every direction. “Both of you can go to hell” I slammed out the door, not even caring that the stupid dragon Wren was smirking at me. A knowing look on his face. I was to angry to be embarrassed that the whole house had no doubt heard us yelling at each other. They could all go to hell and stay there for all I cared. “Hannah” Julian’s voice carried out into the hall as I swept past the giant of a man and padded bare foot to my own room. I didn’t even care that he turned on his heel and followed behind. Looks like I had another jailer now. “Want me to zip up your dress?” Wrens voice was only half joking. “Screw you as well” I threw over my shoulder, slamming the door behind me but not before I heard his answer. “Ohh I’d love too” Julian “What the hell was that?” My brother had started pacing as soon as he had heard Hannah’s door slam behind her. Now his voice was low and dangerous. I shrugged. I had a temper but now in light of Hannah’s hasty departure my anger had started to simmer down. Her own angry outburst had shocked me out of it, and I was starting to regret the things I had said. I really needed to work on thinking before I spoke. “Don’t f*****g shrug at me, she just left” “She’s only down the hall” I tried, knowing it wasn’t the point. We had worked so hard to win her over without pushing our agenda on her and with only one night in our bed she had already left. “Not the f*****g point Julian and you know it” Alex threw up his hands in defeat. He didn’t need to lecture me about how stupid I was, I already knew that. And I missed her already. I sunk to the bed, her perfume filling my nostrils. As Sirens we didn’t have the same super sense of smell as some of the other shifters, our skills laid elsewhere but the lingering smell of her was like a punch in the gut. “s**t” “Yeah s**t” Alexander was busying himself around the room. Not looking at me at all. Seemed I had managed to piss off not one but two people in the space of a few minutes. A record even for me. “Now tell me what has happened and then make this right” And I told him it all, his face mirroring the sadness and disgust on my own. It had been happening more more frequently. The taking of shifter children. Most of these babies were found tortured and dead. Experimented on. Halfway through Lyla had walked in, saying nothing just sitting cross legged on the bed as she had done a million times before. Her darkly tanned legs glistening. “You don’t think Hannah….” She didn’t say anymore but the question was there. It hung in the air like a dark cloud. “No of course not, she would never hurt anyone like that. Human or preternatural” I retorted angrily. I knew she wouldn’t. I had only known her a short time and I knew that much. “I wasn’t saying that she was involved in the cubs death” That was exactly what she was saying, or about to say at least. I frowned. “I like Hannah I really do, she’s good for you and I can tell you both care about her” “Yeah she is our mate” Alexanders voice was losing patience. Lyla waved a hand dismissively, “Do you trust her?” “Yes” “Yes” I said not liking how doubts had started niggling in my brains. “We love her” “Then that’s all that matters, I know you three had a bit of a disagreement this morning and that she is mad with you right now. Would you like me to talk to her?” Lyla was a good friend. She always had been. “I can maybe explain some things to her, you know girl to girl” She gave us both a bright smile. There had been a time where we had considered Lyla a good candidate for a mate. Years before we had Hannah. She had become our dearest friend instead. One that I was grateful; for at this moment. Hannah needed another friendly face in the house, and a girlfriend for her would be good. “That would be great thank you!” I hugged her tight, kissing her cheek. “Hannah” Alexanders voice was panicked. He scooted off the bed. Too late I noticed the scent of my mate. She stood there with wide eyes. I knew how it looked to her, all three of us on the bed that I had shared with her the night before. Alexander in nothing but boxer briefs, Lyla in one her satin night gowns, miles of long tanned legs on display and me with no shirt on. She seemed to take a deep shaky breath and then turned and walked away without a word. Wren was laughing as he followed her. I f*****g hated dragons.
