Chapter 10

1069 Words
May Amanda and Alistair are engrossed in coloring, their small fingers carefully tracing the lines of a coloring book. The doorbell rings, making them look up in curiosity. "Who could that be, Mommy?" Amanda asked, her eyes wide with wonder. "I think it might be a friend of Mine," I said, trying to sound reassuring. "They're here for a little visit." I’m certain it’s the person Benjamin sent to come take the blood sample. Amanda eyes light up. "Ohh. Is it Mrs Russo?." She asks. I laugh silently, I’m sure she’s hoping it’s Donna because Donna never visits empty handed. She always comes with two presents or three. Before I can respond, the doorbell sounds again. I rush to the door and confirm through the peephole that it’s a lady wearing a white doctor’s coat, then I open the door. "Hi, I’m Doctor Claire. From Mr Carter, I’m here to draw some blood sample.” She introduces. Besides her is another person I didn’t notice through the peephole. A tall man with ginger hair and the most dazzling green eyes I’ve ever seen, framed by full eyelashes. He has on friendly smile. "Hi, May. I’m Clyde. I’ve heard so much about you over the years that feel like I know. He introduced himself with a handshake. "Hi there," Clyde greeted the kids, his voice warm and inviting. I didn’t notice when they came here "I've heard so much about you two. I hope it's okay if I'm here." I watch Amanda and Alistair exchange shy glances, then nod with cautious smiles. Clyde's friendly demeanor seems to put them at ease. "Of course, it's okay," Alistair replied, his voice soft but polite. I guide everyone inside and close the door behind me. I give myself a little mental encouragement before catching up with them. I crouch in front of the twins who are seated on the sofa staring at the new faces. "Kids. These are my friends. Doctor Claire here is going to take some blood sample, just a little and it won’t hurt much.” I try to explain, but seems I’m doing a bad job as the kids look more afraid. "Lemme try." Doctor Claire says. Nurse Claire is gentle and understanding, explaining to the kids that she was there to take a small sample of blood to help with a special test. She brought out a kit, filled with medical supplies, and began to set up. "I promise it won't hurt much," Nurse Claire assured them, offering a reassuring smile. Amanda looked a little worried, but Alistair held her hand, offering her comfort. It was heartwarming to see their bond, even in a moment of uncertainty. "Amanda," Nurse Claire said gently, motioning for her to come closer. Amanda took a deep breath and held out her arm. Alistair squeezed her other hand, offering silent support. Nurse Claire skillfully collected the blood sample, her calm words and soothing tone making the process less daunting for Amanda. As Nurse Claire worked, Clyde engaged Alistair in conversation, asking about his favorite subjects in school and what he enjoyed doing in his free time. I’m surprised when Alistair opened up, his shy demeanor giving way to genuine interest as he answered Clyde's questions. Once Amanda's blood sample was collected, Alistair's turn came. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the prick of the needle. Amanda held his hand tightly, her eyes filled with concern for her brother. "You're doing great, Alistair," Nurse Claire encouraged, her expertise evident in her gentle approach. Alistair nodded, trying to be as brave as Amanda. The small needle went in, and he winced, but the procedure was swift. Amanda whispered encouraging words the entire time. "See? That wasn't so bad," Nurse Claire said with a reassuring smile, placing a colorful bandage on Alistair's arm. Alistair managed a small smile, and Amanda pets his back. Clyde offered them both words of encouragement and praised their bravery throughout the process. Once the blood samples were collected, Nurse Claire packed her kit, preparing to leave. I thanked her for her professionalism and kindness. As I escort the two of them to the door she assures me the results would be processed quickly in forty eight hours. I thank her once again and she’s gone. Clyde lingered for a moment, wanting to share a few words privately. I could sense his apprehension and desire to be helpful in this situation. "May," Clyde began, hesitating as he carefully chose his words. "I didn't know about Amanda and Alistair until tonight. Benjamin told me immediately he found out." I felt a mix of emotions—surprise, vulnerability, and the need to protect my children. But I also understood that Clyde was just trying to navigate an unexpected situation. "They're my world," I responded, my voice steady but firm. "I'm doing my best to provide them with a loving and stable environment. I’m no where near Benjamin’s wealth but I can take care of them. I have done so." Clyde nodded, his understanding apparent. "I can see that. Benjamin cares about them deeply. He wants what's best for them." "I know," I said softly, grateful for his empathy. "We'll see what the test results reveal, and we'll move forward from there. I also know he sent you here in his place because he knows I won’t allow him see them until the results is out. Just let him know one thing, I will always prioritize the well-being of Kids before anything else ." As Clyde left, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's events. It’s been a steady roller coaster from the start of the day till now, but the kids have done great, considering I didn’t know how to prepare them for the doctor’s visit and didn’t tell them anything before hand. I sat down with them, offering words of reassurance and love. We spent the evening playing games, laughing, and cherishing each other's company. No matter what the future held, we would face it as a family, bound by love and resilience. In the quiet of the night, as I tucked Amanda and Alistair into bed, I whispered a heartfelt prayer for the truth to be revealed and for our family to find strength and peace in the journey ahead. Together, we would face whatever came our way, supporting each other and cherishing the love that held us together.
