The Devil’s Bargain

My entire body trembled. The metallic scent of blood filled the room, making it impossible to breathe. My pulse thundered in my ears as I stared at the lifeless man lying on the marble floor. This couldn't be happening. This couldn't be real. I slowly lifted my gaze. He stood a few feet away, perfectly calm, as though taking someone's life was no more significant than signing a business contract. He was impossibly tall, easily over six-foot-four, with broad shoulders stretching beneath a perfectly tailored black suit. Dark hair fell effortlessly across his forehead, and a neatly trimmed beard only sharpened the angles of his striking face. He looked less like a criminal… …and more like the devil dressed as a gentleman. But it was his eyes that held me captive. Cold. Piercing. Almost colorless. Icy ivory eyes that looked as though they had never known mercy. He studied me in silence, his expression unreadable. "So…" his deep voice echoed through the room. "You're the girl who walked into the wrong suite." My throat tightened. "I—I didn't mean to." No response. "I was making a delivery." My words tumbled over each other. "The room number… I must have mixed it up." Still nothing. He took one slow step towards me. Then another. Each step stole the air from my lungs until I found myself pressed against the door. "There is no wrong room," he said quietly. "There are only consequences." Tears blurred my vision. "Please…" my voice cracked. "I won't tell anyone. I swear. I'll forget everything I saw." A faint smile touched his lips. "You've already seen too much." I shook my head violently. "No. Please…" He reached out. My body froze. Instead of hurting me, his fingers lifted my chin until I was forced to meet those terrifying ivory eyes. "They're always so certain they'll keep my secrets." His voice was calm. "So convincing." "So desperate." "But people lie when they're afraid." "I'm not lying." "Everyone says that." Fresh tears spilled down my cheeks. "I'm begging you." His thumb brushed away a tear with surprising gentleness. It made him even more frightening. "I have a younger sister," I whispered. His hand stopped. "She's been in the hospital for months." I swallowed the lump in my throat. "She needs a heart transplant." "My parents are gone." I'm all she has." I looked directly into his eyes, hoping—praying—that somewhere beneath all that darkness, there was a trace of humanity. "I deliver food everyday because I need the money." I've taken every shift I can." "I can't lose her." "And if you kill me…" My voice broke. "She'll be alone." For the first time…. Silence. He stared at me without blinking. The room felt impossibly still. Finally, he spoke. "What is her name?" I blinked. "…Emma" "How old?" "Ten." He nodded once, as though filling the information away. Then he turned his back to me. I dared to hope. Maybe… Maybe he was letting me go. The hope lasted only a second. Without looking at me,he said, "You belong to me now." Every muscle in my body went rigid. "W-what?" He turned slowly. My name is Dante Moretti." The way he said it carried the weight of authority. Power. A name that expected obedience. "You witnessed something no outsider was ever meant to see." "I don't leave witnesses alive." Fear flooded through me. "Then why am I still here?" His lips curved into the faintest smile. "Because I've changed my mind." Confusion replaced my fear. "I don't understand." "You won't die." Relief rushed through me so quickly that my knees nearly gave out. Then he continued. "You'll live." "But your life no longer belongs to you." My heart stopped. "No…" "You belong to me." I shook my head. "I'm not some object you can own." His smile widened just enough to send another chill through me. "No?" "Your sister's surgery." "Her medication." "Every hospital bill." "I'll pay all of it." My breath caught. Every… Bill? "I'll make sure she gets the best doctors." "The best care." "Whatever she needs." Tears streamed down my face. "You'd… do that?" "I don't make empty promises." Hope and dread collided inside me. "There has to be a catch." "There is." He stepped closer until there was barely any space between us. "You stay with me." "You obey me." "You don't run." "You don't lie." "And you never betray me." His icy ivory eyes locked into mine. "If you do…" The softness vanished from his voice. "I won't be the one who suffers." My blood ran cold. He wasn't threatening me. He was threatening the person I loved most. I lowered my head, my fist trembling at my sides. This wasn't freedom. It wasn't mercy. It was a cage with golden bars. Dante Moretti hadn't spared my life. He had claimed it.
