CHAPTER 5: The Deal That Changed Everything

1215 Words
I didn’t know why I agreed to meet him. Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was desperation. Or maybe… it was because I had nothing left to lose. The address he sent led me to a quiet part of the city. Not the noisy, crowded streets I was used to but somewhere calmer. More controlled. The kind of place where everything looked expensive without trying too hard. I stepped out of the car slowly, my fingers tightening around my bag. A sleek black building stood in front of me, tall and intimidating. The glass exterior reflected the fading evening light, making it almost impossible to see inside. For a moment, I hesitated. This felt like a mistake. I barely knew this man. The last time I had heard his voice was years ago back when my life was completely different. Back when I was different. My phone buzzed. Unknown number. “I’m outside,” I said as soon as I picked up. “I know,” Adrian replied calmly. “Come in.” A chill ran through me. He knows. Of course he does. Taking a deep breath, I walked toward the entrance. The doors opened automatically, and I stepped into a space that screamed wealth and control. Marble floors. Soft lighting. Silence. Everything felt… calculated. “Miss?” a receptionist called politely. “I’m here to see Adrian,” I said. She smiled instantly, as if she had been expecting me. “Of course. Please go up to the top floor.” Top floor. That alone told me everything I needed to know. This wasn’t just any man. I stepped into the elevator, my reflection staring back at me from the mirrored walls. My eyes were still slightly red. My hair wasn’t as neat as usual. The dress I wore earlier now felt like a reminder of everything I had lost. For a second, I almost turned back. But then his voice echoed in my mind: “I want to help you make them regret it.” The elevator doors opened. And just like that… I stepped into a completely different world. The office was quiet—too quiet. Large windows stretched from floor to ceiling, overlooking the city like it belonged to him. And in the center of it all, He stood there. Adrian. He hadn’t changed. Or maybe… he had changed too much. He was taller than I remembered, his posture straight, his presence commanding. He wore a dark suit that fit him perfectly, like it was made just for him. But it was his eyes that caught me. Calm. Sharp. Unreadable. “You came,” he said. It wasn’t a question. “I almost didn’t,” I replied honestly. A faint smile touched his lips. “But you did.” Silence settled between us for a moment. Then he walked closer. Each step felt deliberate. Controlled. Like he already knew exactly how this conversation would go. “You look different,” he said. I let out a soft, humorless laugh. “That’s what betrayal does to people.” His expression didn’t change. “I know.” Something about the way he said it made me pause. “You said you wanted to help me,” I said, crossing my arms slightly. “Why?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked past me and poured a glass of water, handing it to me without a word. I hesitated… then took it. “Because you need it,” he said finally. “That’s not a reason.” “No,” he agreed calmly. “It’s a fact.” I frowned. “You’re not making any sense.” He met my gaze directly. “They hurt you,” he said. “They humiliated you. And if you do nothing… they will walk away happy while you’re left picking up the pieces.” My grip tightened around the glass. He wasn’t wrong. “And you think you can fix that?” I asked. “I don’t think,” he said. “I know.” There was something dangerous in his confidence. Something that made my heart beat faster not out of fear, but something else. Something unfamiliar. “What exactly are you offering?” I asked carefully. He didn’t hesitate this time. “A deal.” The word hung in the air. “A deal?” I repeated. “Yes.” I set the glass down slowly. “What kind of deal?” He took a step closer. Close enough for me to feel the shift in the air. “Stay with me,” he said. “And I’ll give you everything you need.” My breath caught. “That sounds vague,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “It’s simple,” he continued. “You want revenge. You want power. You want them to regret what they did to you.” He wasn’t asking. He was stating facts. “And you think staying with you will give me that?” I asked. “Yes.” The certainty in his voice was unsettling. “And what do you get out of it?” I pressed. A pause. Then “You.” The word hit harder than I expected. “What?” “You stay by my side,” he said calmly. “Publicly.” My heart skipped. “You mean…” I trailed off. “A contract relationship,” he finished. The room felt smaller suddenly. “You’re serious?” “Completely.” I stared at him, trying to understand what he was saying. “You want me to pretend to be with you?” I asked. “Not pretend,” he corrected. “Appear.” “That’s the same thing.” “No,” he said quietly. “It’s not.” Silence fell again. My mind was racing. This was insane. Completely insane. And yet… “So let me get this straight,” I said slowly. “You want me to stay with you, act like we’re together, and in return you’ll help me… what? Ruin them?” “I’ll help you rise,” he corrected. “Same difference.” “Not quite,” he said. “Because when you rise… they fall naturally.” I swallowed hard. That sounded… dangerously appealing. “And if I say no?” I asked. He didn’t react. “Then you walk away,” he said simply. “And nothing changes.” Nothing changes. The words echoed in my mind. I thought about them. About him. About her. About the way they looked at me. The humiliation, The rejection, The pain. My hands clenched. “What happens if I say yes?” I asked quietly. For the first time, something shifted in his expression. Not emotion. But intention. “Then everything changes.” My heart pounded. This was it. A choice. Stay broken… Or become something else entirely. I took a slow breath. And looked him straight in the eyes. “Okay,” I said. “I’ll do it.” A small, almost imperceptible smile appeared on his lips. “Good,” he said. Then he added.. “Because the wedding is in three days…” My stomach dropped. “And you’re going to attend it,” he continued. “As my woman.”
