CHAPTER 6: The Woman They Won’t Recognize

1178 Words
I didn’t sleep that night. Not because I couldn’t. But because my life had changed in a matter of hours, and my mind refused to catch up. A contract relationship. With Adrian. Even now, saying it in my head felt unreal. I sat at the edge of the bed, staring at my reflection in the mirror. The same face. The same eyes. But something was different. Something had shifted. “Thinking too much won’t help.” His voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned slightly to see Adrian leaning against the doorframe, his presence as calm and controlled as ever. “I wasn’t aware you were still here,” I said. “I said I’d help you,” he replied. “That starts now.” My brows furrowed. “Now?” He pushed himself off the door and walked in, his gaze briefly scanning me before returning to my eyes. “You have three days,” he said. “That’s not a lot of time to rebuild someone.” “I’m not something that needs rebuilding,” I said quietly. “No,” he agreed. “You’re someone who needs revealing.” The words lingered in the air. Revealing. Before I could respond, there was a knock on the door. Adrian didn’t look surprised. “Come in.” The door opened, and two women walked in, both dressed in sleek black outfits, carrying cases and bags. I blinked. “What’s this?” “Your transformation starts today,” Adrian said simply. “I didn’t agree to a makeover,” I replied immediately. “It’s not a makeover,” he corrected. “It’s alignment.” I frowned. “Alignment with what?” “With who you’re about to become.” The women approached me with polite smiles. “Good morning,” one of them said. “We’ll be taking care of you today.” I looked at Adrian. “This is unnecessary.” “No,” he said calmly. “It’s essential.” I hesitated. Every part of me wanted to resist. But then I remembered her face. Her smile. The way she looked at me like I had already lost. My jaw tightened. “Fine,” I said. Adrian nodded once, as if he expected nothing less. “Good.” Hours passed. I lost track of time as they worked on me. Hair. Skin. Outfits. Every detail was carefully handled, like they were building something piece by piece. At first, I felt uncomfortable. Exposed. But slowly… something changed. When they finally stepped back, the room went quiet. “You can look now,” one of them said softly. I stood up slowly and walked toward the mirror. And then I froze. The woman staring back at me… Wasn’t the same person. My hair fell in soft waves, perfectly styled. My skin looked radiant, my features sharper, more defined. The outfit simple, elegant, but undeniably expensive fit me like it was made just for me. But it wasn’t just that. It was the way I carried myself. The way my shoulders were straighter. The way my eyes looked… Stronger. “Is that… me?” I whispered. “Yes,” Adrian’s voice came from behind me. “That’s who you’ve always been.” I met his gaze through the mirror. “For someone who was just humiliated yesterday,” I said, “you’re very confident in me.” “You were humiliated because you allowed them to see you as weak,” he replied. “That ends now.” I turned to face him. “And what if I break again?” I asked. “You won’t,” he said. “How are you so sure?” He stepped closer, his eyes locking onto mine. “Because this time… you won’t be alone.” Something about the way he said it made my chest tighten. Not painfully. But… differently. I looked away first. “What’s next?” I asked. He didn’t hesitate. “Now, we prepare.” “For the wedding?” “Yes.” My stomach twisted slightly. “Do I really have to go?” “Yes.” His answer was firm. “They need to see you,” he continued. “Not the version they think they destroyed.” I exhaled slowly. “And what exactly am I supposed to do when I get there?” He studied me for a moment. “Nothing.” I frowned. “Nothing?” “Walk in,” he said. “Stand beside me. And let them realize what they lost.” That sounded… simple. Too simple. “They won’t just watch quietly,” I said. “She’ll say something. He will too.” A faint smirk appeared on his lips. “I’m counting on it.” I blinked. “You want drama?” “I want truth to surface,” he corrected. “That sounds like drama.” “It usually is.” Despite everything, I almost smiled. Almost. “Then I guess I should be ready,” I said. “You will be.” Later that evening, I stood in front of another mirror. This time, dressed for the event. A deep, elegant dress hugged my figure perfectly. Not too flashy. Not too simple. Just enough to command attention. I barely recognized the woman looking back at me. Not because she looked different. But because she felt different. Stronger. Calmer. Dangerous. “Ready?” I turned. Adrian stood by the door, his suit perfectly tailored, his expression unreadable as always. I nodded slowly. “I think so.” He walked toward me, stopping just close enough to feel his presence. His eyes scanned me briefly, then met mine again. “Good,” he said. Then, without warning, he reached out and adjusted a strand of my hair. The gesture was small. But it sent a strange feeling through me. “You look exactly how you should,” he added. “And how is that?” I asked. “Like someone they’ll regret underestimating.” My heart skipped. He stepped back. “Let’s go.” The car ride was quiet. Not awkward. Just… calm. Like the storm was waiting ahead. As the venue came into view, my chest tightened slightly. This was it. The same place I had left broken. The same place where everything had started falling apart. But tonight… I wasn’t coming back as the same person. The car stopped. Adrian stepped out first, then held the door open for me. I placed my hand in his. And for a brief moment… I felt steady. Grounded. Like I wouldn’t fall this time. “Remember,” he said quietly. “Don’t react.” I nodded. “Let them react to you.” Taking a deep breath, I stepped out of the car. Lights flashed. Voices filled the air. People turned. And just like that… Every eye was on me. But this time, I didn’t feel small. I walked forward, my head held high, Adrian beside me. And inside the venue…The moment she saw me her smile disappeared.
