It was then that the Russians began to run from the Square and rushed towards the gates of the City.
Too late the soldiers on guard outside the Houses of Parliament let off their guns as a warning.
Most of the men, who were not rich or up to date enough to have a small pistol, carried a knife as protection.
Now they drew them out and struck down every Russian they encountered.
The women screamed and the Russians in a panic started to call out in their own language for their friends and companions to get out of the City.
