Chapter 2: Unexpected News

406 Words
Emma spent the next few days with the stranger, whose name she had learned was Alex. They explored the town, went on hikes, and had dinner at cozy little restaurants. Each day brought them closer together, and Emma found herself falling for him. But as much as she enjoyed their time together, there was always a nagging feeling in the back of her mind. She knew she couldn't stay in this idyllic town forever. She had a life back home, a job, friends, and family. As much as she wanted to stay with Alex, she couldn't abandon everything else in her life. On the fifth day of her trip, Emma woke up to a missed call from her best friend, Sarah. She listened to the voicemail, her heart sinking at Sarah's tone. It was urgent. "Emma, call me back as soon as you can. It's important." Emma called Sarah back immediately, and Sarah's voice was shaking as she spoke. "Em, I don't know how to say this, but your mom has had a heart attack. She's in the hospital, and they don't know if she's going to make it." Emma felt as though the ground had opened up beneath her. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had to get home, back to her family. "I'll be there as soon as I can," Emma told Sarah before hanging up. She turned to Alex, who had been watching her closely. He could tell something was wrong. "Is everything okay?" he asked. Emma shook her head, tears in her eyes. "No, it's not. My mom had a heart attack. I need to go home." Alex took her hand, squeezing it gently. "I'll come with you," he said. Emma was taken aback. "What? You don't have to do that. You barely know me." "I want to," he replied. "I care about you. Let me help you." Emma felt a surge of gratitude and affection for him. She didn't want to burden him with her problems, but she couldn't deny how much she appreciated his offer. They packed their bags and headed back to Emma's home. As they drove, Emma couldn't help but wonder if Alex was the answer to her prayers. Could he be the one to help her heal and move on from her broken heart? But as they pulled into her driveway, Emma noticed a familiar car parked outside her house. It was her ex-fiancé's car.
