Chapter 10: The Heartbreak

370 Words
The weight of the prophecy and the looming battle took a toll on their relationships. Emma’s feelings for Alex and Liam grew more complicated, each moment with one shadowed by thoughts of the other. One evening, unable to sleep, Emma wandered the forest near the inn. She found herself at the edge of a familiar clearing, where Alex and Liam were engaged in a heated argument. "You’re not thinking clearly, Alex!" Liam shouted. "You’re letting your feelings cloud your judgment." "And you’re not?" Alex shot back. "This isn’t just about us, Liam. It’s about Emma. It’s about all of us." Emma stepped into the clearing, her heart pounding. "What’s going on?" Alex turned to her, his expression torn. "Emma, we need to make a choice. We need to decide who you want to be with. This triangle isn’t sustainable, and it’s affecting our ability to fight the rogues." Emma felt tears sting her eyes. "I can’t choose between you. I love you both, in different ways." Liam stepped forward, his eyes filled with sorrow. "Emma, we can’t go on like this. It’s tearing us apart." Emma’s heart shattered. She knew they were right, but the thought of losing either of them was unbearable. "I need time. I need to think." She turned and ran back to the inn, her emotions in turmoil. That night, she lay awake, torn between her love for Alex and Liam and the weight of the prophecy hanging over them all. The next morning, Emma made her decision. She found Alex and Liam in the library, their faces etched with worry. "I’ve made my choice," she said, her voice steady despite her trembling heart. "Alex, I love you. But Liam, I love you too. This isn’t fair to any of us." She took a deep breath. "I’m choosing neither of you. Not because I don’t love you, but because I can’t bear to hurt either of you. We need to focus on stopping the rogues and fulfilling the prophecy. After that... we’ll see where things stand." Alex and Liam exchanged a look, their expressions filled with pain but also understanding. "We’ll respect your decision," Alex said softly. Liam nodded. "We’re in this together, no matter what."
