“I’ve been trying to reach you,” Lauren said. “Was your phone off?” “I couldn’t speak.” Junie sighed and turned away from the shop. All afternoon, she’d thrown herself into cleaning and organizing to take her mind off her disappointment. Only now had she turned on her phone. “You put a lot of work into this deal for me, Lauren. I’m sorry it didn’t work out.” “What are you talking about?” Lauren said. “I’m calling to congratulate you.” “On what?” Junie was confused. “I didn’t get the house.” She could still see Knox’s face in her mind. That he intended the house for his parents eased her pain a little. Not much, but some. She imagined them as an older couple who needed help, and her heart went out to them.
