Chapter 16 – Prom Night Elena – First Person POV I never imagined I’d feel this way before prom. Calm. Confident. And oddly… excited. I stood in front of the mirror, barely recognizing the girl staring back. My hair was swept up into soft waves, pinned with delicate silver clips that shimmered under the lights. My dress—a flowing, midnight-blue gown with thin straps and subtle sparkles scattered across the fabric—hugged me just right, making me look like I’d stepped out of some fairytale dream. I turned slightly, smoothing down the skirt, still in disbelief at how everything had changed. My mom stood nearby, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue, a fond, teary smile on her face. “You look… breathtaking, sweetheart,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. I smiled back at her, warmth blooming in my chest. “Thanks, Mom.” She walked over and gently adjusted the thin silver necklace resting against my collarbone. “Don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re not worthy of every second of tonight,” she said softly. “You’ve earned this. All of it.” I swallowed the lump in my throat, her words wrapping around me like a hug. Before I could reply, the sound of a car pulling up outside made my heart leap. “He’s here,” my mom said with a knowing smile. I took a deep breath, grabbed my small clutch, and headed for the door. Stepping outside felt like stepping into a whole new world. There he was—Jace—leaning against a sleek black car that gleamed under the soft evening light, dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo with a matching midnight-blue tie. He looked… stunning. But the moment his gaze landed on me, everything else seemed to fade. His eyes widened, and for the first time ever, Jace Anderson looked completely speechless. He slowly straightened, his lips parting as he took me in from head to toe, his expression softening with every passing second. “Wow,” he breathed out, his voice low and genuine. I felt my cheeks heat up, but I didn’t look away. “You’re beautiful, Elena,” he said, still staring like he couldn’t quite believe it. “Like… really beautiful.” I let out a soft laugh, partly to steady myself. “Thank you.” My mom appeared at the door behind me, smiling warmly but also watching us like a hawk. “Be careful,” she called out with a playful but serious tone. Jace turned to her, offering a respectful nod. “I promise, ma’am.” With that, he offered his arm, and I slipped my hand through it, letting him lead me toward the car. As we pulled away from the curb, I glanced back to see my mom waving from the doorway, her eyes still a little glassy but filled with pride. And just like that, the night began. Here’s Part 2 of Chapter 16: “Prom Night”, continuing directly from Jace picking up Elena—now moving into their grand entrance at prom, where Elena stuns everyone. First-person POV (Elena). The ride to the prom venue felt almost unreal. Jace kept stealing glances at me from the driver’s seat, his usual calm and cool demeanor softened into something warmer, something I’d never seen before. “I still can’t believe it,” he said quietly, his lips curling into a faint smile. “You look… incredible.” I laughed softly, feeling surprisingly at ease. “If you keep staring, we’re going to end up in a ditch.” He smirked but looked back at the road. “Fair warning. It’s going to be hard not to stare all night.” I bit my lip, the butterflies in my stomach fluttering with every mile we drove closer to the venue. When we finally pulled up in front of the school gym—transformed into a stunning prom hall with glowing lights, elegant drapes, and a red carpet rolled out toward the entrance—I felt every eye shift toward us immediately. People gathered around the entrance, cameras already out, phones raised to capture arrivals. But everything stopped the second I stepped out. Gasps filled the air. Whispers spread like wildfire. “Is that Elena?” “She looks like royalty.” “I didn’t even recognize her!” Jace stepped around the car and offered his hand, helping me out gracefully. I took it, lifting my dress slightly as I stepped onto the red carpet. I held my head high, every step steady, every heartbeat strong. And beside me, Jace looked as composed as ever, though I caught the faintest hint of pride in his smile. As we walked into the ballroom together, the reactions grew louder. Students stopped mid-conversation, their jaws dropping as they turned to watch. The room was breathtaking—glittering lights strung from the ceiling like stars, velvet curtains framing every wall, and tables adorned with silver and gold accents. But for the moment, none of it mattered. Because all anyone could see was us. From across the room, I caught sight of Lia and the others, their faces lit up in pure excitement. “Elena!” Lia mouthed, her eyes wide with glee. I smiled back, my confidence soaring. Even Mia, standing with a smaller, quieter circle near the far side of the hall, couldn’t hide her shock. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she took in my dress, my hair, my presence. For once, she was the one left speechless. Jace leaned closer as we walked deeper into the crowd, his voice low and teasing against my ear. “You really are the queen tonight.” I couldn’t help but smile wider. For the first time in my life, I believed it too. The music shifted into a slow, enchanting melody as we made our way inside. Jace never let go of my hand, his grip firm yet gentle, like he wasn’t ready to share me with the rest of the world just yet. “Elena, you’re seriously stealing the whole night,” Lia gushed as she and the others hurried over to us, eyes wide with excitement. “You look amazing! I almost didn’t recognize you!” I laughed softly, feeling the warmth of my newfound confidence. “Thank you. You all look incredible, too.” We exchanged compliments and playful teasing, but I could feel the weight of dozens of stares lingering on me and Jace as we stood together in the center of it all. Everyone was watching. But tonight, for the first time, I wasn’t afraid of it. Soon enough, the upbeat songs took over again, and the dance floor started to fill up. “Shall we?” Jace asked, offering his hand once more. I raised a playful brow. “You dance?” He grinned. “For you? Always.” I laughed, allowing him to lead me onto the dance floor. The lights dimmed just enough to make the glittering room feel like a fairytale dream. Around us, couples swayed and danced, but it felt like there was no one else but us. Jace spun me with ease, his hand on my waist drawing me closer, our laughter mingling with the music. I could feel the eyes on us, but I didn’t care. I was having too much fun. Throughout the night, the evening unfolded like something straight out of a fantasy. We danced. We laughed. We posed for photos together with Lia, her date, and our entire group, our smiles growing wider with every click of the camera. Even as we sat down for a break, students kept approaching—some to compliment me, others simply curious. “Elena, you look stunning tonight.” “I didn’t know you and Jace were so close!” “You two are literally the perfect couple.” I blushed a little at their words, but surprisingly, I wasn’t overwhelmed. I thanked them politely, leaning closer to Jace in quiet amusement. “I’m starting to think this night might actually be fun,” I joked. Jace chuckled. “Told you. And it’s only just beginning.” Hours passed in a blur of lights, music, and endless conversation. Even Mia’s lingering glances from across the room couldn’t ruin it. Though I noticed her watching—her eyes cold, her arms crossed—I refused to let her dampen the night. She didn’t approach. She didn’t need to. Her simmering jealousy was enough of a presence on its own. Still, I stayed with my friends, laughing and enjoying every moment. Eventually, the music faded slightly as the DJ’s voice echoed through the speakers. “Ladies and gentlemen, the time has finally come! It’s time to announce this year’s Prom King and Queen!” Cheers erupted around the room. I blinked in surprise as the excitement swelled. Students crowded near the stage, shouting out names and chanting for their favorites. My heart raced, but I told myself it was just a formality—I wasn’t expecting anything. “And now,” the DJ grinned, holding up the shimmering crowns, “your Prom King…” He opened the envelope dramatically. “Jace Anderson!” The crowd roared with cheers and applause. Jace stood up calmly, a charming grin spreading across his face as he made his way toward the stage. He glanced back at me, winking playfully before climbing up to accept his crown. I clapped along with everyone else, smiling proudly—but the nerves started to creep in. “And now… your Prom Queen…” The DJ paused again for dramatic effect. I held my breath. “Elena Velazquez!” Everything went still for a second. Gasps rippled through the crowd. It was like the entire gym froze. I stared at the DJ, stunned. I… won? “Elena! Go!” Lia urged excitedly, nudging me. My legs felt shaky, but somehow, I stood up, my heart pounding wildly in my chest. As I walked toward the stage, the crowd erupted again—this time louder than before. People were cheering, clapping, shouting my name. “Elena! Elena!” I felt weightless as I climbed the steps. The DJ placed the glittering crown on my head, and in that moment, I couldn’t hold back my tears. Jace reached out, his hand gently finding mine as we stood together under the glowing lights, the entire school watching. He leaned in, whispering just loud enough for me to hear. “See? You were born for this.” I laughed through my tears, shaking my head in disbelief. The DJ’s voice boomed once more, encouraging the crowd to cheer as we shared our Prom King and Queen dance. The music softened to something slow and romantic as Jace pulled me closer, his hands resting gently on my waist. I looked up at him, still dazed. “I never knew a girl from a low background could become a queen,” I whispered. He smiled warmly. “You’ve always been a queen to me, by the way, where did you get this dress?, It's to die for.”He asked holding me tighter. "It's my mother's wedding dress, she gave me to wear since t was a special occasion". "Your mother is so nice and loving", he said with me placing my head on his chest. We swayed together as the whole school watched in awe. Later, after the dance and the photos, something unexpected happened. As the crowd began to thin, Mia finally approached us—her steps hesitant, her expression softer than I’d ever seen. She looked at me, then at Jace. Her voice was quiet, almost fragile. “I… I’m sorry.” The words stunned me as much as they stunned everyone nearby. She took a deep breath, her eyes misty. “For everything. I was… wrong. About you. About both of you.” Silence filled the space between us. Then, slowly, I extended my hand toward her, my voice steady. “Let’s not waste any more time hating each other.” Mia’s eyes widened in shock—but then, she nodded and took my hand. From nearby, I heard Lia gasp softly in amazement. As we stood there, the former rivals finding peace under the soft glow of the prom lights, I couldn’t help but smile. Maybe life really did have a strange way of turning things around.
