ADAM
“Explain word to word, Addy!! I still can’t believe, whatever happened down in the hall was not some block buster scene executed. Look at my arm, the skin is still raised in goosebumps.”
Packing her make up, I correct her, “You mean the hair of your skin,”
She gasps, “No, did you forget I just got full body waxed just couple of days before. Come to think of it I should book an appointment for you as well. In fact let me do it now,”
I sighed in relief, her attention was shifted on something else for few moments. 'How could I explain her about the most irreversible, complicated reality of my life?'
After Azrael’s grand declaration, they proceeded the discussion in Mr. Richard’s study. I was not asked to join them, so I locked myself in my room. I didn’t bother with anything, simply chose to take a long needed nap.
I was slightly refreshed enough, attempting to digest my dinner which was downright difficult. Often I’d get skeptical stares. I was literally playing hide and seek with people to escape their questioning spree. Especially Mrs. Richard, oh my god that woman was hunting me since hours.
If not for Sora secretly pulling me in her room, I considered the idea of spending the night in store room and jump out the window to reach the venue. With everything around, my brain was short circuited to go for such crazy plans.
“Okay the appointment is booked for early morning, I mean we’d be on tight schedule but it’s going to be worth it. All we have to do is be on the clock, preparing for our d- day.”
'Worth it,' I mentally chuckle sarcastically. Everything else seemed to have some sort of worth, except for my feelings. It was never considered as important aspect in any decisions of life. I was merely told or demanded.
Annoyingly, I slammed the suitcase loudly on the floor. Exhaling a deep breath, I gave an apologetic look to Sora. She silently kept staring at me, one arm crossed the other fist supporting her chin.
Groaning mentally, I know that look. Sora might be childish sometime handling situations in her life though her radar is 'on' when it is about observance. I guided her skill to develop more, it seems from her face- my own teaching was going to bite my butt.
“Adam, when did Azrael propose you for the wedding? Why does he want it to happen in such a short span of time, almost like he is desperate? He outwardly rejected to even wait for couple of weeks. Why?”
Her queries were normal and expected. The discussion with him in his office after I’d signed the contract, reel through my mind. We both agreed to keep our story- true and small. There wasn’t any point in creating some fake cheesy scenarios, anyways it was impossible with Azrael. I mean he isn’t like dates and roses kind of man.
Look at my conscious mind defending his intriguing, indifferent behavior. Sora snaps her fingers in front of my vision, I resume wheeling her suitcases in a row.
“You could have, uhmm…asked him directly?”
It wasn’t easy for me to lie openly, for him it was. I had firsthand experience to be manipulated by him.
“I did ask him,”
She confesses, I rush to her side clutching her hands fearing what if he told her the entire truth not the rehearsed part. I clearly demanded him, we’d not to mention anyone about the contract between us. He agreed to all my conditions.
“Relax Addy, you are behaving as if it’s kind of life or death secret. She smiles easing my nerves. “In fact he answered in simple words- I want him in my life.” she mimics his gruff voice.
I chuckle ignoring the innocent flutter of my heart believing his so called heart felt response.
“Seriously Addy, please tell me are you happy with the pace your relationship has escalated or do you want my help to postpone the wedding. I know you, you have this bad habit of concerning everyone’s happiness than yours. It’s oddly difficult for you to be selfish even if it concerns your whole life.”
She knows me so well.
Sighing softly, I grasp her hands, “My sweet pumpkin is finally adulating, huh? She scrunches her nose. Smiling, I continue, “Stay put your running mind, honestly speaking Sora. I’m going with notions of life, leaving the rest to destiny. What is meant to happens will happen.”
“But, are you happy Addy?” she stresses, staring concernedly.
I swallow the guilt of again lying to her.
“Yes, I’m happy. As long as you’re.” The last part was true at least.
She gives a big aww and throw herself on me. Balancing our weights together, I kiss her head. ‘Yeah, as long as my Sora is happy, everything was going to be worth it.’
*****
My eyes were turning droopy feeling the exhaustion seeping through my body. Hopefully I’d get to sleep instead of spending entire night with depressing, over imaging scenarios. I pushed the door of my room inside, the second I stepped, my feet halted in spot. The lights were off, I clearly remember turning them on in evening.
“Still scared of darkness, baby?”
My heartbeat stopped hearing his dark voice, I forced my frozen senses to work. Taking several steps back, I desperately flailed my hands in direction of switches the other hand pushing the door open. Before anything could change the situation, he jumped in front, a frightful shriek emitted from me. He slapped his hand on my mouth, throwing his weight on my body.
“Why are you behaving like I’m stranger to you? Or maybe the glitters of the expensive gifts that young amateur threw at you, erased your previous memories. Previous experiences I did to this body, tell me?”
I claw at his wrist, he releases his hand with a hiss. “Get out of my room, also my life Vincent!!”
Clapping his hands, he starts back walking, “Impressive, getting high due to the fact that a powerful man is having your back. Stop fooling yourself, Adam.”
Briefly ignoring his presence, I concentrate to slow down my frantic breathing. Flicking on the lights, I find him sitting on my bed with his head grasped in between his hands. I know what is going to come next.
“Adam, baby,” he calls with an even voice staring at me with pleading eyes. “Please don’t ruin your life by trusting Azrael. You are ignorant to think he is interested to spend his future with you. I might not know his exact intentions but there is something he is hiding and you are clueless becoming part of his scheming.”
I remain silent even if mentally agreeing with him. His slight bruises on face remind me of Azrael, he truly did number on him. I don't know what excuse he made up to convince his family, I didn't bother inquiring about it. At least he was out of my sight. Though my satisfaction was short lived.
He swiftly stood up, walking towards me.
“Maybe he wants your body, goosebumps break out on my skin. “But he can’t have it because this is mine, isn’t it?” he trails his finger on my chest.
“You will never change Vincent, I swat his finger, stepping beside. “This is your typical game, to show how much you care for me then seduce me to give in your ways,” I humorlessly chuckle.
His expression switches, I fist my hands tightly to stop them from shaking. I hate it even years later Vincent could spring his fear on his will. Even if I get physically bruised, I will stand for myself.
“Guess what Vincent, no matter whatever you say I’m getting married to Azrael, tomorrow. Leave my room so I could rest well before my wedding day,” I look in his eyes unfearfully.
He shakes his head, muttering to himself in quick steps, he packed a punch to my jaw. I fall on the ground with a painful groan, cupping the side of my face. Vincent looms over me, my mouth releases open breath.
“Consider it as a small gift, for your would be husband. I can totally imagine the delightful expression he’d have to see your face. He twirls a finger, and I lean away from him. “One side with permanent ugly mark, the other side with my mark.”
He straightens his posture, brushing his clothes, giving me a sinister grin.
“Good night, Adam. Sleep well and have pleasant nightmares about me,”
The second he exits my room, I crumble on ground sobbing at my fate. Why me? What did I do wrong in life to deserve such mistreatments from anyone?
