ADAM
'Who are you?'
This was the question popped in my mind when I saw myself in the mirror. It was almost the end of the celebratory night, Azrael with his parents was sending off last couple of guests. I excused myself for a quick bathroom break as Sora mentioned in conversation over dinner, it was a long way from the venue to Azrael’s residence.
The man in reflection has bright eyes gleaming with happiness, cheeks tinted with color, lips tilting in tiny smile. Absolutely nothing what I assumed about wedding day became true. I was weary about many things especially Azrael’s 180 shift behavior but I can’t deny, the day was memorable.
Only god knows till when this calmness would remain in my life.
I move towards the corridor, recollecting, my single suitcase was already delivered to Azrael’s residence. Sadly Marcus didn’t live with him, so I can’t meet Sora every day. They must be on airport by this time for their honeymoon in Hawaii. I wonder if Azrael just maybe planned a holiday, not like I was expecting something to happen but to know him as a person.
In our previous encounters I have seen many sides of Azrael from gentleman, to manipulator businessman, to kind of...who am I lying, the most romantic man. It was in bit and pieces, it left me intriguing more and more.
I want to know Azrael, the hidden sides of his heart and soul. Would he allow me?
“Adam Azrael De Luca,” a chill runs through me hearing the dark voice.
Vincent, I have not seen him after he left me in the room. I’d surely do anything to not change it otherwise. Though my fates seems to have other plans.
He moodily walks nearing me, I want to dodge whatever his intentions were. But there were still few guests outside, I can’t let him create a scene. And he valued his image too much to not reveal his diabolical side. I have nothing to lose.
“The name has nice ring, isn’t it? Congratulations by the way,” he forwards his hand, I suspiciously look at him.
He mockingly frowns, “What, your man has leashed you already to not meet other men outside of his knowledge.”
He’d never change. I side step from him, he blocks my way.
“If your new husband fails to pleasure you rightfully then remember my doors are always open,”
Gasping in disbelief, I stumble few steps back. How could he...My fingers curl in tight fist, I open my mouth to say something.
“And if you don’t step away from my husband then door to your coffin would be opened,”
Azrael taking long strides comes from behind, Vincent laughs finding it silly whereas I was fearing if his threat was truly meant to be. Azrael might be younger than Vincent and I, still his undaunted presence crowds the ambience demanding attention from everyone. It both amazed and intimidated me.
The two stand against each other, I bit my lip at the tension filling in the air.
“Azrael, why does it always look like, you are easily offended. I was just joking with Adam for old time’s sake,”
Azrael doesn’t look convinced, in fact, his stormy eyes hardened with aggressiveness. Even he didn’t directly ask, I’m sure he must have clue about my past with Vincent. Or maybe he knows more than he lets on.
I hold my breath when Azrael turns his gaze on me, I expected he’d question instead he snakes his muscular arm around my waist pulling closer to him. I stumble slightly at the impact, grasping his arm. Vincent glares at our position.
“No, Vincent you didn’t offend me. Yet. If it were to happen trust me on this, you wouldn’t have chance to even think about the consequences. And another thing...speak to my husband in inappropriate way again then you’d see what it is truly called to offend me,”
The clear warning alarms Vincent and my eyes widen in disbelief as this was the first time I have seen him frightened.
Without waiting for his reply, Azrael walk us out from there. The cool breeze slithers my face once we reach outside. Azrael’s opens the passenger side of the awaiting car, for me. I mutter a quick thank you, getting inside. He rounds the car to take the driver’s seat, he points at my seatbelt looking at front, igniting the engine. Strapping the seatbelt, I twiddle with my fingers rehearsing in my mind to c***k the looming silence between us.
Where do I even start? I don’t think I have strength to freely speak about my toxic relationship with Vincent. There was already complete shift in his aura, I could clearly feel it. Several times I open my mouth to say something or anything at least but the words swallow in my mouth the moment I gaze at the way his tightened fingers on staring wheel would flex every few seconds.
He was angry but with what exactly?
He doesn’t spare me a single glance until he stops the car passing through the gateway. Wordlessly clicking the door open and stepping out. I silently follow his suit, noticing it was late at night already. Momentarily, I get amazed roaming my gaze through lengths of his residence.
It’s huge expanse was eye catching only then I notice it was constructed in almost isolated area as they weren’t any neighboring homes. Just like his personality, undisturbed and solemn yet impressive.
The entrance doors were widely open, sprinting a short flight of stairs he was welcomed with two people. His built easily hid me, I didn’t bother to attract their attention on me.
“Congratulations sir, from all the housing staff we wish you both eternal happiness and secured good health,” the man’s accent was different, though his wishes sounded so genuine to make anyone smile.
Except Azrael of course, he barely nods.
“Thank you for your kind wishes, we’d like to retire for the night.”
The peppiness doesn’t deter, politely he responds, “Of course sir, you both must be tired from the long day.”
They both steal a gaze at me, enthusiastically smiling and leaving the foyer.
“Follow me,”
'As if I had any better option.'
Even if I feel like dragging my body with uninterested steps, I minimize the noise of my footsteps as we ascend a staircase. Azrael is painfully silent both with his movement and voice. Passing through a long corridors, taking two turns he twist the metal handle of one of the room and pushes it inside.
“Wow!”
I can’t decide if the aesthetics of this room was awe-striking- with a huge bed flattened to the ground almost, brown fluffy comforter, center table to my right big comfortable looking couch, further walking inside, I notice black colored open structured closet then other door must be bathroom.
Though mind-blowing part was ridiculously tall windows with panoramic view of luscious greenery backyard. It wasn’t completely dark, the pole lights fencing them was shredding enough light. I was grateful because as delightful the sight was, in bad weather or midnight it would have scared the living daylights of me. If I wear to reside in this room.
Keeping the questionable look, I turn to face him.
“This is your room.” My smile fades, it means he wouldn’t share the room with me.
'What did I expect?' It was actually better to have separate rooms, to not forget the reality of this marriage. Azrael went inside the closet, I stayed there, glancing at nothing in particular. Sora must reach her destination by next day afternoon. I’d wait for her to call whenever she’d decide, instead of disturbing their plans.
I blink out of my thoughts, to find Azrael coming with couple of things in his hands and nodding at me to near him. One by one he discloses the things, turning my heartbeat frantic.
“This credit card is on your name, limitless. He slaps a black card on the center table, “Next is the keys of the car allotted for you along with the driver at your service. You’d meet Thomas tomorrow, he is going to be your bodyguard. Lastly, there is new mobile with working sim for your use.”
He gives a thoughtful look as if trying to remember something more. When he doesn’t have anything else he drifts his gaze finally to my eyes. All these cryptic talks direct only one thing…
“You are leaving me,” I ask just to confirm my assumption.
'Please say I’m wrong. Please.'
“Yes, I have to be there at airport within two hours. If you’re interested in further details of my itinerary, I have texted briefly to your new phone. And you-
He trails off, I blankly stare at the center table with everything he placed that he thinks I’d require forgetting the most important one in the expensive display.
“Adam, he calls my name in strained voice, I move my eyes to his. “You are being provided with possibly everything you’d need, safety, wealth, freedom so why are you upset? Tell me if there is something else you want to add?”
‘You, where are you in all this?’
Instead my answer was, “Nothing,”
He shakes his head, fiery eyes coiling my body, “Two things Adam- you are free to keep, whatever you want but change the habit of lying to me. I won’t tolerate it and second- remember this was exactly what you have signed for?”
A lump forms in my throat not for being reminded but at how conveniently he says in straight tone. At my unresponsiveness, he walks close to me.
“Honestly I couldn’t state the date of my arrival but it shouldn’t be long.”
He brushes his fingers on my cheeks dropping a quick peck on my forehead and leave the room.
“Take care, I will wait for you.”
I don’t know if he heard or not as I glued my gaze to the floor, breathing heavily.
'I knew it, my life was seeming too perfect to be believable.'
