Truths Beneath The Surface

The door clicked shut behind me, the sound echoing in the small room. My eyes locked onto the two men in front of me, the air thick with tension. Damien stood near the table, his jaw clenched, eyes flashing with something unreadable. The other man, the one I had seen before in the alley, was standing next to him, his presence like a shadow—silent, watchful, and ominous. I had walked into something I wasn’t supposed to see. The question was, had I been led here, or was this a mistake I couldn’t undo? The silence stretched on, suffocating, until Damien broke it with a sharp exhale. "I told you not to come," he said, his voice low but firm, an undercurrent of frustration threading through his words. I crossed my arms, my heartbeat loud in my ears. "What is this? Who is he?" I couldn’t hide the tremor in my voice, though I tried to sound confident. I needed answers, and I needed them now. Damien’s eyes flicked to the other man, then back to me. "This isn’t your business, Evelyn." His words were cold, as if he had rehearsed them a thousand times. "I told you to stay away from all of this." "From what?" I demanded, my voice rising with the frustration that had been building inside me for weeks. "From you? From whatever secret you’re keeping from me? Damien, I’m tired of this. I deserve to know what’s going on. I deserve the truth." The man beside Damien took a step forward, his presence dark and intimidating. He was taller than Damien, his face a perfect mask of indifference, but his eyes were calculating, sizing me up. I could feel the weight of his gaze like a pressure against my skin. "She's not wrong," the man said, his voice deep, gravelly. "If you keep pushing her away, she’ll only dig deeper. You can’t keep her in the dark forever, Damien." Damien’s expression hardened, his eyes narrowing. "I can protect her by keeping her away from this world," he replied, his tone sharp and final. But even as he said the words, something flickered behind his eyes—something that suggested he wasn’t as sure as he wanted to appear. I wasn’t about to let this slide. Not this time. "No," I said, my voice steady now, "you’re protecting yourself. You’re protecting whatever it is you’ve gotten yourself involved in. And you’ve been dragging me through your mess without even telling me what it is." Damien’s jaw clenched, his hands fisting at his sides. "You wouldn’t understand," he said, the words rough, as though saying them caused him pain. "This isn’t a life you want to be a part of." "And yet, here I am," I snapped back. "You think I don’t understand because I’m not some business mogul, because I don’t live in your world? But I’m a person, Damien. I have a right to know what’s going on." The man beside Damien stepped closer, his eyes never leaving mine. "Maybe it’s time we tell her," he said, his voice laced with something that was almost amusement. "The longer you keep her in the dark, the harder it will be to get out of this." Damien shot him a look that could’ve melted steel, but the man wasn’t fazed. He just stood there, waiting, as if daring Damien to challenge him. "Fine," Damien muttered, his voice low and resigned. "But you’re not going to like it." He turned to me, his eyes softening for the briefest of moments, as if the walls he’d built between us were starting to c***k. "Evelyn, I—" Before he could finish, the door behind me suddenly slammed open, and another figure entered the room. My heart skipped a beat as I recognized the newcomer. Ethan. He strode into the room like he owned it, his eyes scanning over the scene with a knowing look. "This is quite the family reunion," he said, his voice laced with sarcasm. "Should I have brought gifts?" Damien’s expression darkened at the sight of Ethan, his fists clenching once more. "What are you doing here?" he snapped, his voice tight with tension. Ethan’s lips curled into a small smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. "I’m here for the same reason you’ve been keeping her in the dark," he said, his gaze flicking to me briefly before returning to Damien. "You can only hide the truth for so long, old friend." I looked between the two men, confusion swirling in my chest. "What is going on?" I demanded, my voice rising. "What is all of this? Why are you two acting like… like you know each other?" Ethan glanced at me briefly, then back at Damien. "You’re going to have to tell her sooner or later, Damien," he said with a shrug. "The secrets, the lies—they’re catching up to you. It’s only a matter of time before she finds out the truth." Damien’s expression darkened, his gaze shifting to the floor, as if the weight of Ethan’s words had hit him harder than anything I had said. For a moment, he was silent, his shoulders tense. But finally, after what felt like an eternity, he spoke. "I never wanted you to get caught up in this," he said quietly, his voice rough. "But it’s too late. You’ve already seen too much." "Seen too much?" I echoed, my frustration boiling over. "Damien, stop being cryptic! What is going on? What is it that you’re involved in? What are you hiding from me?" Damien’s eyes finally met mine, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of the man I had once believed him to be—the man who had cared for me, who had been there when I needed him the most. But even now, that man seemed to be slipping away, replaced by someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t share his truth. "The truth?" Damien’s voice was barely a whisper, and I had to strain to hear him. "You wouldn’t be able to handle it." I wasn’t sure if it was the way he said it or the coldness in his tone, but something inside me snapped. I had already seen the cracks in his carefully constructed walls. He was breaking down, piece by piece, and I wasn’t about to back down now. "I’m already in this, Damien," I said, my voice steady, though my heart pounded in my chest. "I’m already involved. You don’t get to make the decision for me. I’ll find out the truth, whether you tell me or not." For a moment, there was only silence—heavy, suffocating silence. Then Damien finally spoke, his voice low but resolute. "Fine," he said, his words heavy with the weight of everything unspoken. "You want the truth? Then brace yourself. Because once you know, there’s no going back." And with that, everything changed. ---
