A Campus Scandal

989 Words
Episode 13 It started as a normal Thursday morning. Grace was walking toward her lecture hall, her backpack slung loosely over one shoulder. She hummed softly to herself, thinking about the sweet evening she had shared with John yesterday. The lanterns, the music, the gentle sway of their hands—it all still felt surreal. Her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her thoughts. Anita: Grace! Did you see what’s going around campus?! Grace frowned. What now? She quickly typed back: Grace: What is it? Anita: Some photos… of you and John. Everyone’s talking. Some people are saying… well, you better see it yourself. Her heart skipped. Photos? Of them? Grace rushed to a quiet corner of the campus courtyard and opened the link Anita had sent. Her eyes widened. The photos were candid shots of her and John from yesterday—smiling, holding hands, leaning close. Nothing inappropriate, but the captions made them sound scandalous: “John finally found a new girl… campus gossip says they’re inseparable.” “Is John cheating? This girl is everywhere with him.” Grace’s chest tightened. She stared at the screen, her stomach turning. Why would someone do this? she thought. ⸻ Meanwhile, John was walking across campus when his friend Michael ran up. “Dude, you’ve gotta see this,” Michael said, handing him a phone. John frowned. He scrolled through social media posts and the photos of him and Grace. He ran a hand through his hair. “Who the hell…?” Michael shrugged. “Some students love drama, man. Don’t worry about it.” John’s jaw tightened. “No… Grace will see this. She’ll think it’s true.” Michael frowned. “Just talk to her. It’s nothing serious.” John nodded, determination flashing in his eyes. ⸻ Grace spent the rest of the morning distracted, barely able to focus in class. She kept thinking about the photos and the captions. Does everyone really think this about us? Does John know? After class, she decided she needed answers. She found John under the mango tree, waiting. “John…” she started, her voice trembling slightly. He looked up, concern immediately in his eyes. “Grace, are you okay?” “I saw… the photos,” she said quietly. John’s expression darkened. “I saw them too. I was going to talk to you before they spread even more rumors.” Grace crossed her arms. “It’s everywhere, John. People are saying things… things that aren’t true.” “I know,” John said, standing. “And that’s why I’m telling you the truth right now. I’m not cheating on you. It’s just me… and you.” Grace wanted to believe him. She really did. But the whispers, the captions, and the glaring stares around campus made her doubt herself. “Why would someone do this?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. John sighed. “Some people like drama. Maybe they’re jealous… maybe they just want attention. But it doesn’t matter. What matters is us, Grace. Only us.” ⸻ Grace looked at him, searching his face for any hint of dishonesty. There was none. Her heart ached at the unfairness of it all. “I just… I hate that this is happening,” she admitted. “I hate it too,” John said, reaching for her hand. “But we can handle this. Together.” Grace felt a flicker of hope. “Together?” she asked. “Always,” he said. ⸻ Over the next few days, the scandal grew. Students whispered when Grace passed by. Social media posts circulated with comments speculating about John’s intentions. Grace tried to keep her distance from the drama, but it was impossible to ignore. One afternoon, as she was sitting in the library, she overheard a group of girls talking. “Did you see John and Grace yesterday? I don’t trust him. He’s probably seeing other girls too.” Grace’s hands trembled slightly as she gripped her notebook. ⸻ John, on the other hand, refused to let the gossip affect them. He approached Grace after class, holding her favorite chocolate bar. “Hey,” he said softly, sitting beside her. “Ignore them. They don’t know anything about us.” Grace looked at him, grateful but still shaken. “It’s hard.” “I know,” he said. “But you have to trust me. And I trust you. That’s what matters.” Grace nodded slowly, taking a small bite of the chocolate he had brought. ⸻ Later that evening, Grace and John met at the campus garden, a place where they had shared many quiet moments. “I don’t want this scandal to ruin us,” Grace admitted. John shook his head. “It won’t. We’ll show people that what we have is real. That it’s strong enough to withstand rumors.” Grace felt a sense of relief wash over her. “How?” she asked. “By being ourselves,” he said, taking her hand. “By being honest, by showing each other trust. The rest doesn’t matter.” Grace smiled softly. ⸻ The following week, the campus slowly quieted down. The scandal faded, and while a few whispers remained, most students moved on to other gossip. Grace realized that John had been right—the only thing that truly mattered was their trust in each other. ⸻ That night, Grace sat by her window, looking at the stars. She held a note John had left her on the table: “No rumor can ever change what’s real. I’m yours. Always.” Tears pricked her eyes, but this time they were happy tears. Grace finally understood: love wasn’t about what others thought or said. It was about what they shared, what they believed in, and how they chose to protect it. ⸻ And as she drifted to sleep, Grace whispered softly to herself: Together… we can face anything.
