The First Date

Episode 5 The next morning felt different. Grace woke up with a strange mix of excitement and nervousness. She sat on her bed for a moment, staring at her phone. She had barely slept. Her mind kept replaying everything from the previous day— Seeing John with Sarah… Admitting her feelings… And the way he looked at her afterward. It was no longer confusing. It was real. ⸻ Her phone buzzed suddenly. Her heart jumped. She quickly picked it up. John: Good morning, Grace 🙂 A small smile appeared on her face. She typed back slowly. Grace: Good morning Almost immediately, another message came in. John: Are you free later today? Grace stared at the screen. Her heart started beating faster. Is this what I think it is? She hesitated before replying. Grace: Maybe… why? A few seconds passed. Then— John: I want to take you out Grace froze. Her eyes widened slightly. Out? As in… a date? Her fingers hovered over the screen as her thoughts raced. What do I say? Is this too fast? What if I mess things up? Then she remembered Anita’s words. “You won’t know unless you try.” She took a deep breath and typed: Grace: Okay She stared at the message after sending it, her heart pounding loudly. ⸻ Later that afternoon, Grace stood in front of her mirror, unsure of what to wear. “This is ridiculous,” she muttered, holding up two outfits. She had never spent this much time choosing what to wear before. “Why does it even matter?” she asked herself. But deep down, she knew the answer. Because it was John. After several minutes, she finally settled on a simple but elegant outfit—a soft blouse and jeans. Nothing too much, but just enough to make her feel confident. She took one last look at herself in the mirror and nodded. “Okay… you can do this.” ⸻ When Grace arrived at the meeting spot—a small café just outside campus—she saw John already waiting. He was leaning casually against the wall, checking his phone. For a moment, she just stood there, watching him. Why does he look so… calm? As if sensing her presence, John looked up. And smiled. That smile. It instantly made her nervousness worse—and better at the same time. “Hey,” he said, walking toward her. “Hi,” Grace replied softly. John looked at her for a moment, his eyes scanning her outfit. “You look nice,” he said. Grace felt her cheeks warm. “Thank you.” “You always look nice,” he added casually. She laughed nervously. “You’re just saying that.” “I’m not,” he said. “I mean it.” Grace looked away, smiling. ⸻ They walked into the café together. The place was quiet and cozy, with soft music playing in the background. They found a table near the window and sat down. “So,” John said, leaning back slightly, “is this your first time going out like this?” Grace blinked. “Like what?” “Like… a date,” he said, smiling. Her heart skipped. “So this is a date?” she asked. John raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t think it was?” Grace looked down, embarrassed. “I wasn’t sure.” “Well, now you know,” he said. She smiled softly. ⸻ After ordering their drinks, the conversation began to flow. They talked about everything— Classes Childhood memories Dreams Fears For the first time, Grace found herself opening up completely. “I’ve always wanted to write my own book,” she admitted. John nodded. “You should.” “What if it’s not good enough?” she asked. He looked at her seriously. “Then you write another one.” She laughed. “You make it sound so simple.” “It is simple,” he said. “Not easy—but simple.” Grace smiled. “That actually makes sense.” ⸻ At one point, their hands brushed on the table. Grace quickly pulled hers back, her heart racing. John noticed. He smiled slightly but didn’t say anything. Instead, he gently placed his hand closer to hers— Not touching… But close enough. Grace noticed. And this time… She didn’t move away. ⸻ As the evening went on, Grace realized something important. She wasn’t nervous anymore. She was comfortable. Happy. And completely present in the moment. ⸻ After they finished, they stepped outside. The sky was already dark, filled with stars. They walked slowly, side by side. “Did you enjoy it?” John asked. Grace smiled. “Yes… I did.” “Good,” he said. “Because I did too.” They stopped walking. There was a soft silence between them. The kind that said more than words could. ⸻ “Grace,” John said gently. She looked at him. “Yes?” “I’m glad you said yes today.” Her heart softened. “Me too,” she said. For a moment, it felt like time had stopped. John took a small step closer. Grace’s breath caught. Is this really happening? But instead of rushing, John simply smiled. “Goodnight, Grace.” She blinked, surprised—but also relieved. “Goodnight, John.” ⸻ As she walked back to her room, Grace couldn’t stop smiling. Everything about the day replayed in her mind— His words His smile The way he made her feel It was more than she expected. More than she was ready for. But somehow… It felt right. ⸻ That night, as she lay in bed, one thought stayed with her— This was no longer just the beginning. It was the start of something real. Something beautiful.
